David Tennants’ Hamlet named theatre event of the year

The Whatsonstage.com Theatregoers’ Choice Awards have been announced, seeing David Tennant’s leading role in Hamlet voted event of the year. The Awards also saw Kenneth Branagh win best actor for Ivanov, Eddie Izzard named best solo performer, Katy Stephens win best actress for her role in The Histories and Josh Hartnett rewarded for his performances in Rain Man with London newcomer of the year.
A back had injury forced Tennant to pull out of the opening night of Hamlet and limited him to only a handful of appearances at London’s Novello Theatre before the run ended. Nevertheless, critics heaped praise on his performance justifying its best event tag and alos best regional production following its early sting in Strafford-Upon-Avon.
Following this hugely popular Hamlet production which ended earlier this year, theatregoers who missed out will be keen to get to get hold of tickets. Fear not the latest production of Hamlet staring Hollywood star Jude Law is set to start on June 3 at the Wyndham’s Theatre. Previews begin on May 29 and hundreds of Hamlet tickets are currently available from £60.

Best actress in a musical: Sofia Escobar – West Side Story (Sadler’s Wells)
Best supporting actor in a musical: Stephen Ashfield – Jersey Boys (Prince Edward)
Best supporting actress in a musical: Tracie Bennett – La Cage aux Folles (Playhouse)
