Final pre-season testing underway in Formula One

February 25th, 2010 by Adam Davies

This season’s Formula One championship looks to be more exciting than ever before, as there are countless contenders for the title of world champion. Rule changes have come into effect that prohibit refueling for the first time in 16 years, and so cars will get progressively faster as they become lighter through the races. It has been estimated that differences between a full fuel load and a tank with just enough for a qualifying lap is five seconds.

After a disappointing season last year, Ferrari look to bounce back with the signing of Fernando Alonso to replace Finn Kimi Räikkönen, who has departed to take part in the World Rally Championship. Alonso will join Brazilian Felipe Massa in the Ferrari hotseat, and it is strongly rumoured that their car is the fastest in the field. However, it is unknown for sure because there is suspicion that many of the carmakers have deliberately overfilled their fuel tanks in order to mask performance.

Qualifying for the Bahrain Grand Prix will begin on March 13th, with practice the day before, and it is only then that the potential of each of these teams will be unleashed.

Meanwhile, tickets for the British Grand Prix at Silverstone are available now, with the season shaping up to be a classic already. British fans will be hoping for a McLaren 1-2, with the last two world champions Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button both hailing from these shores.
