“Red Knights” prepare bid for Manchester United

March 2nd, 2010 by Ewan Eyre

A group of wealthy financiers known as The Red Knights have today released a statement confirming that they are readying a bid for Premier League champions, Manchester United.

“Following the intense media speculation overnight, we can confirm that a group of high net worth individuals, who support Manchester United met in London yesterday. This group is supportive of current management but are looking at the feasibility of putting together a proposal to be put to the Glazer Family regarding the ownership of Manchester United. These discussions are in early stages and no contact has been made with the Glazer Family.”

United are currently owned by the Glazer’s, but revelations of the club’s enormous debt, a reported £716.5million, has left much unrest amongst the supporters.

The group of potential investors, led by Goldman Sachs chief economist Jim O’Neill, also said that for their potential takeover to be successful, they would need the support of Manchester United fans.

Despite events off the field, Manchester United recently overcame Aston Villa in an entertaining Carling Cup final, and will be looking to take their form into the remainder of the season.
