Excitement builds ahead of Spanish Grand Prix

May 4th, 2010 by Adam Davies

After two victories from four races so far this season, reigning world champion Jenson Button leads the Formula One title race. Wins in fifty percent of his races will please his new employers at McLaren immensely, while Lewis Hamilton is similarly progressing through the standings. If both drivers can replicate their excellent race form in qualification, they will doubtlessly be contenders for the championship.

The Spanish Grand Prix is this weekend, and Button looks the more likely driver to finish first. Circuit de Catalunya is widely regarded as being one of the harshest tracks on a car’s tyres, and Button’s smooth approach will likely preserve them better than Hamilton’s aggressive driving style.

The Red Bulls of Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber also both seem to devour tyres, so the main contenders in Barcelona could well be between Button and the Ferraris of Felipe Massa and Fernando Alonso – driving in his home Grand Prix.

The Ferrari doesn’t cope quite as well as the McLaren in the rain, but given that the last time it rained on May 9th in Barcelona was in 2002, Massa and Alonso ought to be safe from the elements.
