Almost 2.9 million World Cup tickets sold

June 3rd, 2010 by Adam Davies

A massive 3.6 million people were at World Cup USA 94, with average crowds of almost 69,000.

According to FIFA, almost 2.9 million World Cup tickets have been sold from primary vendors for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa – almost 100% of the allocation. While plenty of tickets are available on the secondary market, this still puts it on course to become the second most attended tournament ever – quite a feat for a country approximately a ninth of America’s size.

It will be a relief for FIFA and for South African organisers, for when tickets first went on sale there were fears that stadiums would be half full thanks to slow initial consumer interest.

Now though, they can just look forward to a successful tournament.
