What’s more, he could cost far less than the figures bandied about in the media.

“Beijing [for the Italian Super Coppa] could really be the last time we see Sneijder in the shirt of Inter, after which he will wear the Red of United,” said Morabito to IlSussidiario.net.

“I was surprised by the fact that Sneijder never partly nor entirely made clear his position on these rumours: in other words, instead of denying everything, he preferred to remain silent and this factor can only be a further clue.

In a press conference Ferguson stated: “Semi-finals are never easy. This is going to be a difficult game and we will treat it that way.”

Ibrahimovic will now miss most of Milan’s title run-in, including matches against Sampdoria, Brescia and Bologna.

A statement released by the Lega Serie A confirmed the 29-year-old striker had been banned for having “insulted the assistant”.

Ibrahimovic received his eighth caution of the season during the game, earning an automatic ban, but was then sent off for abusing the assistant.

The Rossoneri have not confirmed whether they will appeal the ban. They are currently first in Serie A, three points above Napoli.

Inter Milan will not emulate their success last season, when Jose Mourinho led them to a famous treble winning season. But the manner in which they beat Bayern Munich to progress to the quater-finals shouldn’t be underestimated. After losing the home leg 1-0, Inter then fell further behind in the second leg before producing an astonishing combeack to win 3-2 on the night and go through on away goals.

Whoever comes out victorious in this tie will face either Chelsea or Manchester United.

Ronaldo missed Real’s last two matches with a leg muscle strain and Mourinho said he would decide today whether the La Liga joint top scorer would play against Lyon.

Still, the Spanish side can call upon a mighty strike pairing themselves. Diego Forlan and Sergio Aguero are two of the most feared forwards in Europe, and they are backed up by Jose Antonio Reyes, Simao Sabrosa, Raul Garcia and former Arsenal player Fran Merida. Speaking of interesting transfers, the overflowing wallet of Sheikh Mansour at Manchester City has already seen the club splash out on some top notch talent in Jérôme Boateng, Yaya Touré and David Silva – and by the time of their next match in the United States they may even have added more talent! A forward line of Lionel Messi, Gonzalo Higuain, Diego Milito, Carlos Tevez, Sergio Aguero and Martin Palermo will inspire fear in every team in the tournament, while surprisingly Maradona has adopted a greater emphasis on defence than in his earlier matches.

Although AC Milan lost to Inter on January 24th, since then they have picked up 13 points to Inter’s 10 and have closed the gap at the top of the table to just four points. Both sides have the distraction of Champions League football to worry about, but with AC Milan conceding three goals to Manchester United they are certainly not favourites to progress. Inter have a tough task at Chelsea, but at least Mourinho has a slender 2-1 lead to defend at his old stomping ground of Stamford Bridge. “Mourinho does not lose at Stamford Bridge” said the Inter boss, referring to his tenure in charge of Chelsea when he never lost a home game.

At this stage of the season, much comes down to a team’s mentality in the face of adversity. If, as expected, AC Milan are knocked out of the Champions League, their only focus would be the league – having been eliminated from the Italian Cup at the quarter final stage. It is a fascinating battle and at present it is impossible to tell whether Milan’s red or blue half will be celebrating come the end of the season, or indeed if Roma, seven points behind could make a breathtaking comeback.

Other battles underway include Juventus’ challenge for the elusive fourth Champions League spot – they are two points behind current occupants Palermo, and Fiorentina’s desperate struggle to get into any European slot after doing so well last year. The Viola are still in the Champions League, but it looks like winning the competition will be their only chance of gaining a place in next year’s tournament.

The hectic Christmas schedule often throws up some fascinating local clashes and this year is no exception.

On Monday 28th December, Fulham travel across SW6 to Stamford Bridge for the west London derby against Chelsea who have suffered a minor wobble of late.

After the conclusion of Matchday 6 in the UEFA Champions League the group stage has finally come to an end giving us the names of all the 16 teams that will fight it out in the knockout section of the competition.

No nation is currently dominating the competition though England’s Barclays Premier League and Spain’s La Liga both had three group winners – those teams constituted their total amount of representatives after Liverpool and Atletico Madrid fell at the first hurdle. Group E in next summer’s FIFA World Cup is very well balanced group and one that is not all that straightforward to predict.

Holland are the seeded team in Group E and they will rightly be favourites to qualify top of the pile after their flawless record in qualifying. Arjen Robben, Wesley Sneijder and Rafael Van Der Vaart will cause any defence problems as will Arsenal’s Robin Van Persie assuming he suffers no complications recovering from his long-term injury. One area which might be considered a weakness is at the back where they have failed to convince in recent years. But the Dutch play with the attitude of ‘you score one, we’ll score two’ and they certainly have the talent to do that.

Denmark will take part in their first major tournament for six years when they pitch up in South Africa and they will be confident of making it through the group. The Danes suffered just one defeat in qualifying for the tournament and finished above much-fancied Portugal to secure an automatic berth. The team lack any superstars but a strong collective work ethic means they are capable of felling supposedly superior opposition.

Japan have been regulars at the World Cup of late and they made it to South Africa with the minimum of fuss – losing just once on the road to qualification. A good showing on home soil in 2002 was not followed up in 2006 when they managed just a single point but with skills of former Celtic star Shunsuke Nakamura in their midst they will certainly pose a danger especially if needless free-kicks are conceded within shooting distance.

Cameroon will be making their sixth appearance at World Cup finals and though they may not reach the heights of the 1990 side they are not to be discounted. Led my former Lyon and Rangers manager Paul Le Guen they are a tough outfit which also has a major goal threat in the form of Inter Milan’s Samuel Eto’o.

Group F is the by far the tightest of all those in this season’s UEFA Champions League with just three points separating all four clubs.

In fact any of the clubs can finish in any of the four positions and table-topping FC Barcelona could possibly end up bottom and out of European competition altogether.

The Catalans face the cold and hostile trip to the Ukraine to face Dynamo Kiev knowing a point will be enough to see them through to the next round with a win guaranteeing them top spot. A draw would see Kiev climb above surprise package Rubin Kazan if the Russian side lose at home away to Inter Milan but a victory by three goals over the European champions would see them overhaul Barcelona and qualify for the second round.

It’s crunch time in Group C of the UEFA Champions League with three teams all vying for the two qualification spots.

Real Madrid, AC Milan and Marseille could each go through, conversely any could potentially exit the competition at this early stage.

Two titans of European football clash on Tuesday night in the UEFA Champions League as Juventus host Bayern Munich in a ‘winner takes all’ encounter.

Following Real Madrid’s win against Racing Santander over the weekend, the Galacticos will no doubt be in a confident mood. Barcelona only managed a draw 1-1 at Bilbao.

Just two matchdays remain in the group stages of the UEFA Champions League and the pressure is beginning to mount.

The 2009/10 Serie A season is hotting up nicely with most of the usual suspects rising to the top of the table.
