This is going to be a difficult game and we will treat it that way.”

Schalke have been the surprise package of this year’s championships, demolishing Inter Milan 7-3 on aggregate in the quarter-finals to set up the crunch match with United.

“Schalke have beaten every team at home in the Champions League this season, including Valencia and Inter Milan. If you just take that in isolation, it is good form,” added Ferguson.

“There is no way we will be led into believing this is going to be easy.”

http://www.tixdaq.com/news/?p=17579

Current holders Inter will hope to progress to the semi finals against Ralf Rangnick's Schalke 04.

Current Champions League holders Inter Milan face the German side Schalke 04 in Tuesday’s other quarter-final game.

Both sides have had transitional seasons, with Inter sacking Rafael Benitez and replacing him with ex-AC Milan gaffer Leonardo and Schalke replacing Felix Magath with Ralf Rangnick.

Domestically both sides haven’t faired particularly well either. Inter lost the Milan derby 3-0 on Saturday and Schalke’s season has been a bit of a shambles, with the team currently sat in 11th place and gaining half the points of league leaders Borussia Dortmund. Schalke’s game on Friday was also called off in the 88th minute when the referee was hit by a cup full of beer. Schalke were 2-0 up against St. Pauli.

Schalke’s progress to the quarter-finals comes as a surprise given their domestic form, but with an attacking line-up that includes Klaas Jan Huntelaar, Jefferson Farfan, Angelos Charisteas and Raul, they’ve got the experience in the squad.

Inter Milan will not emulate their success last season, when Jose Mourinho led them to a famous treble winning season. But the manner in which they beat Bayern Munich to progress to the quater-finals shouldn’t be underestimated. After losing the home leg 1-0, Inter then fell further behind in the second leg before producing an astonishing combeack to win 3-2 on the night and go through on away goals.

Whoever comes out victorious in this tie will face either Chelsea or Manchester United.

http://www.tixdaq.com/news/?p=17504

Nine time Champions League winners Madrid face the men from N17.

It’s the team with the most European Cup medals against the Champions League rookies.

It’s the team managed by a multi-million pound Hollywood manager who has won the tournament twice with two different clubs, against a manager famous for locking Amdy Faye in his house in an effort to sign him.

When Tottenham qualified for the Champions League through Peter Crouch’s winning goal at Manchester City last season, it was games like tonights at the Bernabeu that Spurs fans hoped for. Despite topping the group stages, beating Inter superbly at home on the way, and coming through a two legged game against AC Milan without conceding a goal, Spurs will be the underdogs tonight.

“We are the big underdogs,” manager Harry Redknapp said. “I’ve said all along that the two Spanish teams are the favourites. But we are not just coming here to turn up. The dream is still there for us all and we want to make that dream come true. We want to go all the way.”

This is the first time in seven years that Real Madrid have reached the quarter-final stage of the Champions League and on Saturday manager Jose Mourinho lost his nine year record of being undefeated in home games, stretching back to 2002 when he was manager of Porto. But Madrid will be the heavy favourites and are boosted by the inclusion of Cristiano Ronaldo, Gonzalo Higuain, Marcelo and Kaka in the squad to face Spurs.

Spurs own injury worries means they may only field six substitutes. All eyes will be on Gareth Bale, who has lit up the European stage and announced himself to the world by ripping apart Brazilian right back Maicon in the two games against Inter. But if Spurs can leave the Bernabeu with a good result, few would bet against them at White Hart Lane. If Madrid turn in a similar performance to some domestically, where they scored eight without reply against Levante and seven against Malaga, Spurs’ dream tie will quickly become a nightmare.

<a

The last two matches have been tightly contested affairs, with Manchester United v Zenit St Petersburg, and Barcelona v Shakhtar Donetsk each decided by a single goal, and the 2010 event looks set to be similarly tight.

Inter Milan are the current European Cup holders, but have since lost coach Jose Mourinho to Real Madrid. In his place they have hired former Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez, and he won the competition back in 2005. Of course, that year the Reds came from 3-0 down to defeat AC Milan on penalties, and in inflicting such a morale sapping defeat on the Nerrazzuri’s arch rivals Benitez will have done his job prospects no harm at all.

Inter Milan boast plenty of star players. There is the rampaging right back Maicon, who doesn’t view shooting from practically a 180 degree angle as a ridiculous thing to do. For those questioning if the Brazilian’s goal against North Korea (or the Democratic People’s Republic Of Korea if you prefer) was deliberate, he scored a near identical one against Portugal in November 2008. The midfield boasts star names such as Esteban Cambiasso, and Wesley Sneijder, while up front Benitez can choose from Samuel Eto’o, Diego Milito, Goran Pandev and Mario Balotelli.

Formidable opposition for UEFA Europa Cup champions Atletico Madrid to tackle.

Still, the Spanish side can call upon a mighty strike pairing themselves. Diego Forlan and Sergio Aguero are two of the most feared forwards in Europe, and they are backed up by Jose Antonio Reyes, Simao Sabrosa, Raul Garcia and former Arsenal player Fran Merida. Forlan was awarded the Golden Ball at the 2010 World Cup, and with good reason – he appeared to be the only player to have mastered how to shoot with the Jabulani ball, and was a constant danger.

Ajax v Chelsea tickets at the Amsterdam Arena on July 23rd 2010 are available from £57 through World Ticket Shop. The Netherlands is just a short ferry or flight away, and of course there are plenty of other attractions to a trip to the Dutch capital city too. The match itself features two giants of European football, and given in Chelsea and Ajax’s league campaigns last season they scored 103 and 106 goals respectively, it is sure to be an exciting game between two attacking sides.

FC Kaiserslauten v Liverpool tickets at the Fritz Walter Stadion on July 24th 2010 are on sale from £41 at Sports Events 365, and will offer a chance to see what new boss Roy Hodgson plans for the Merseyside team – and by then some interesting transfers could well have been made.

Speaking of interesting transfers, the overflowing wallet of Sheikh Mansour at Manchester City has already seen the club splash out on some top notch talent in Jérôme Boateng, Yaya Touré and David Silva – and by the time of their next match in the United States they may even have added more talent! Manchester City v Inter Milan tickets at the M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore are available from £30 from Ticketmaster USA, and it will be interesting to see how the English club performs against the European Champions – now of course managed by Rafael Benitez.

Meanwhile, two of the biggest names in club football face off against each other in what could be a pre-season classic: Bayern Munchen v Real Madrid tickets are on sale now from £29 from Seatwave, and new Madrid coach Jose Mourinho has already started to make his mark on his side – despite not having played a match. He has signed Benfica and Argentina winter Angel Di Maria, who will cause havoc down the left. For the Munich side, Arjen Robben will look to make an impression on his former side.

<enclosure

Their 6-0 demolition of Serbia in the group stage was the climax of their tournament however, and despite Esteban Cambiasso’s goal at the end of a 24 pass move, Argentina crashed out to Germany on penalties in the quarter finals.

UEFA Champions League winner Cambiasso wasn’t even selected by coach Diego Maradona for this year’s tournament in South Africa, along with Inter Milan teammate Javier Zanetti, but even though Argentina haven’t progressed beyond the quarter finals of the tournament since 1990, they have a real chance of winning the 2010 World Cup.

A forward line of Lionel Messi, Gonzalo Higuain, Diego Milito, Carlos Tevez, Sergio Aguero and Martin Palermo will inspire fear in every team in the tournament, while surprisingly Maradona has adopted a greater emphasis on defence than in his earlier matches.

The tournament may be under a week away, but <a

Inter Milan knocked his side out of the UEFA Champions League 3-2 on aggregate, and though Barcelona were undoubtedly rocked by the result, they responded in emphatic fashion. A 4-1 victory at Villarreal is impressive regardless of the circumstances, and they remain one point ahead of Real Madrid in La Liga’s standings.

Both Barcelona and Real Madrid have dropped points in just one home match each all season, and with Barca losing just once on the road they are undoubtedly the favourites for the title. Real Madrid will have to hope that their Catalan rivals drop points against either Tenerife, Real Valladolid or Sevilla if they are to avoid a trophyless season.

Only four teams have shut out Barcelona’s magnificent attack of Lionel Messi, Andres Iniesta, Zlatan Ibrahimovic et al this season: third placed Valencia, city rivals Espanyol, Internazionale (once in the Champions League Group Stage, but not in their two knockout ties), as well as, bizarrely, Rubin Kazan.

Can Tenerife, Valladolid or Sevilla do it? It looks unlikely. Barcelona won each of the reverse fixtures earlier in the season, scoring twelve goals and conceding none in the process; a clear illustration of their sublime footballing prowess.

<a

Compare and buy Serie A tickets online.

Inter Milan have seemed to be an unstoppable force under Jose Mourinho. Like the Special One’s Chelsea side, the Nerazzurri seem to have a habit of doing just enough to win each match. However, recently Inter have struggled to find that cutting edge in their play, and have drawn four of their last five matches. Three of those four draws have been 0-0 as opponents have managed to shut Inter out.

Although AC Milan lost to Inter on January 24th, since then they have picked up 13 points to Inter’s 10 and have closed the gap at the top of the table to just four points. Both sides have the distraction of Champions League football to worry about, but with AC Milan conceding three goals to Manchester United they are certainly not favourites to progress. Inter have a tough task at Chelsea, but at least Mourinho has a slender 2-1 lead to defend at his old stomping ground of Stamford Bridge. “Mourinho does not lose at Stamford Bridge” said the Inter boss, referring to his tenure in charge of Chelsea when he never lost a home game.

At this stage of the season, much comes down to a team’s mentality in the face of adversity. If, as expected, AC Milan are knocked out of the Champions League, their only focus would be the league – having been eliminated from the Italian Cup at the quarter final stage. It is a fascinating battle and at present it is impossible to tell whether Milan’s red or blue half will be celebrating come the end of the season, or indeed if Roma, seven points behind could make a breathtaking comeback.

Other battles underway include Juventus’ challenge for the elusive fourth Champions League spot – they are two points behind current occupants Palermo, and Fiorentina’s desperate struggle to get into any European slot after doing so well last year. The Viola are still in the Champions League, but it looks like winning the competition will be their only chance of gaining a place in next year’s tournament.

There are some huge matches in Serie A coming up this month, and tickets to the following are all available to compare and buy on Tixdaq.com:

Juventus v AC Milan.

The two biggest clubs in Italy clash on Sunday with a win vital for both clubs as they bid to deny Inter Milan a fifth straight Scudetto. It is also equally important for both teams to avoid defeat as third-placed Juventus and second-placed Milan find themselves nine and eight points respectively behind Jose Mourinho’s leaders.

Milan may have lost their talisman Kaka to Real Madrid and Carlo Ancelotti to the Chelsea hotseat over the summer but this month sees the return to the club of another icon. David Beckham has re-joined the club on-loan from Los Angeles Galaxy as he bids to demonstrate his fitness and form ahead of the 2010 World Cup and the match at the Stadio Olimpico in Turin could be his first in a Milan shirt since his latest arrival.

Tickets for this mega-clash are still available to compare and buy at tixdaq.com with prices starting from £110.

Fulham travel across SW6 to Stamford Bridge for the west London derby against Chelsea who have suffered a minor wobble of late.

No wins in four matches across three different competiitons for the Blues has alerted rival teams that the Barclays Premier League title that was practically awarded to them following their 3-0 win over Arsenal is now up for grabs.

Added to that is a sense of defensive fragility from set-pieces that is reminiscent of the dark days of Luiz Felipe Scolari’s reign. Manager Carlo Ancelotti maintains that he is not overly concerned and you can understand why. The goals agsint APOEL Nicosia a week ago were the first conceded at home by Chelsea since Hull came to town on the opening day of the season.

But with Michael Essien injured and their other African players off on international duty during January, Chelsea will be keen to secure maximum points over the festive period.

Fulham have had an up and down seasonso far. Their fluctuating form has been the result of an intense UEFA Europa League campaign and a lengthy injury list.

The likes of Danny Murphy have returned to the fold but the absence of star striker Andy Johnson has been keenly felt and while Bobby Zamora has found the net a couple of times of late, the former Tottenham and Brighton forward has never been known for his potency in front off goal.

Nevertheless, Fulham will set out to frustrate Chelsea and capitalise on any defensive mistakes from the home team. A festive fixture between the two clubs last season – albeit at Craven Cottage – ended in a 2-2 draw after Clint Dempsey scored a late equaliser following a nightmare in the Blues defence in the aftermath of a corner.

Chelsea will still be favourites but a tenacious Fulham might just fancy their chances.

Tickets for Holland are the seeded team in Group E and they will rightly be favourites to qualify top of the pile after their flawless record in qualifying. Arjen Robben, Wesley Sneijder and Rafael Van Der Vaart will cause any defence problems as will Arsenal’s Robin Van Persie assuming he suffers no complications recovering from his long-term injury. One area which might be considered a weakness is at the back where they have failed to convince in recent years. But the Dutch play with the attitude of ‘you score one, we’ll score two’ and they certainly have the talent to do that.

Denmark will take part in their first major tournament for six years when they pitch up in South Africa and they will be confident of making it through the group. The Danes suffered just one defeat in qualifying for the tournament and finished above much-fancied Portugal to secure an automatic berth. The team lack any superstars but a strong collective work ethic means they are capable of felling supposedly superior opposition.

Japan have been regulars at the World Cup of late and they made it to South Africa with the minimum of fuss – losing just once on the road to qualification. A good showing on home soil in 2002 was not followed up in 2006 when they managed just a single point but with skills of former Celtic star Shunsuke Nakamura in their midst they will certainly pose a danger especially if needless free-kicks are conceded within shooting distance.

Cameroon will be making their sixth appearance at World Cup finals and though they may not reach the heights of the 1990 side they are not to be discounted. Led my former Lyon and Rangers manager Paul Le Guen they are a tough outfit which also has a major goal threat in the form of Inter Milan’s Samuel Eto’o.

Prediction: Holland and Denmark to edge through in a very tight group

<a

A draw would see Kiev climb above surprise package Rubin Kazan if the Russian side lose at home away to <a

Barcelona only managed a draw 1-1 at Bilbao.

Before next weekend’s El Clasico, both sides will be playing in the Champions League. Barcelona entertain Inter Milan at the Nou Camp, while Real Madrid take on FC Zurich at the Santiago Bernabeu. The two sides need to win their respective games and can’t afford to rest their top players ahead of Sunday’s derby.

Barcelona are fortunate to be without many injury concerns and Xavi, Andres Iniesta and Lionel Messi should all be fit for Sunday’s encounter. Most of Real Madrid’s Galacticos should be fit, however, former Manchester United star, Cristiano Ronaldo, is unlikely to return from injury before Sunday’s match. Ronaldo has now been out of action for nine weeks, and despite having returned to full training at the end of last week, he is not expected to feature in next Sunday’s match. That said, Real Madrid have refused to rule Cristiano Ronaldo out.

With this weekend’s El Clasico only days away, Tixdaq can confirm that Barcelona v Real Madrid tickets are still available. This is a very rare opportunity to see two of Europe’s greatest sides go head-to-head in what will no doubt be a fantastic match.

AC Milan once the MLS season has reached his conclusion.

An arrangement has been reached between his parent club Los Angeles Galaxy and the Serie A giants to replicate the loan deal that took place last season. England manager Fabio Capello has always said that his players must play first team football in a well-regarded league in order to be eligible for selection and in a World Cup year that becomes even more important.

In his previous stint in northern Italy Beckham proved to be something of a revelation scoring two goals in his eighteen appearances for the Rossoneri scotching accusations that he was only recruited for marketing purposes. He also demonstrated his trademark work ethic as well as his astute football brain to become a firm crowd favourite.

The move means ‘Goldenballs’ will be able to play in the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League assuming that Milan qualify from Group C. He will also renew acquaintances with a star-studded midfield that includes the likes of Andrea Pirlo, Clarence Seedorf and Gennaro Gattuso – a far cry from the likes of Leonard Griffin and Chris Birchall with whom he shares the middle of the park at the Galaxy.

Providing Beckham is he shlould be in line for an appearance against<a

A win for Fiorentina at Lyon in their next outing would condemn Rafael Benitez and his men to the UEFA Europa League.

Defending champions Barcelona are also in an uncomfortable position though not nearly as precarious as Liverpool. They sit third in Group F but with just two points separating all four teams they should be able to secure the necessary results to move into the next round.

Bayern Munich, however, are hanging by a thread with a victory away at Juventus on the final day almost certainly required for the Bavarians to have any chance of qualifying. Failure to do so would be a catastrophe for manager Louis Van Gaal who spent a vast amount of money in the summer overhauling his squad.

Neither AC Milan nor Real Madrid are assured of qualification either. The teams occupy the two top spots in Group C but with Marseille lurking ominously a point behind the pair there is still scope for an upset.

It is going to be a nervy few weeks for many clubs around Europe.

<a

City rivals AC Milan have recovered from a dreadful start to the season to sit in third place in the table but will take a lot of heart from their 3-2 win in the Bernabeu against Real Madrid in their UEFA Champions League group match.

Juventus appointed their former defender Ciro Ferrara to the manager’s hot-seat following the dismissal of Claudio Ranieri and the rookie has surpassed expectation by sitting in a creditable second position with almost a third of the season gone.

Sampdoria made a flying start but their challenge has wilted of late while Fiorentina are chugging along nicely with their potent strikeforce of Adrian Mutu and Alberto Gilardino causing headaches for opposing defences.

The teams from the capital are both struggling though AS Roma are slowly climbing the table following the arrival of local man Ranieri.
