Andy Murray comes through French Open test against Gasquet

One could be forgiven for a sense of déjà vu. Andy Murray lost the opening two sets against mercurial Frenchman Richard Gasquet in their first round match of the French Open, which immediately brought Gasquet’s capitulation at Wimbledon from the same position two years ago.

In SW19, crowd pressure and mental fatigue appeared to get to Gasquet, but at Roland Garros, his loss was more down to physical condition.

Having played and won an exhausting final in Nice against Fernando Verdasco on Saturday, Gasquet looked in excellent form ahead of the French Open. However, with just a day between that match and his clash with Murray, he barely had any time to recover.

Despite playing excellently for the first two sets, with multiple winners from his beautiful backhand, he could not maintain his level, and the British number one lives to fight another day. He will next face Argentinian ace Juan Ignacio Chela, who he beat in last year’s tournament – as well as in the ATP Madrid Masters earlier this year.

Clay is not Murray’s favourite surface, but he did reach the quarter final in Paris last year. After the climax of the French Open, the grass court season begins, and the Scot will attempt to defend his title at the AEGON Championships at Queens in a top class field. Queens Club will host some of the very best in the game, including Murray, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Fernando Verdasco, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Marin Cilic.

The semi-finals of the 2009 AEGON Masters are now only days away. It looks like the first of the semi finals will see Stefan Edberg take on Greg Rusedski, while Pat Rafter goes head-to-head with Goran Ivanisevic in the second.

This year’s AEGON Masters are taking place at the Royal Albert Hall in London and they are proving to be very popular with tennis fans in the UK.

Both semi finals are set to take place this Saturday and we can confirm that tickets are available for both matches as well as the final which will take place on Sunday (December 6).

Davydenko wins ATP World Tour Finals

Nikolay Davydenko won the first big tournament of his career in London on Sunday, running down just about every ball and using a consistent serve to beat US Open champion Juan Martin del Potro 6-3, 6-4 to win the ATP World Tour Finals at the O2 Arena. Davydenko lost only five points on serve in the first set and eight in the second.

Royal Albert Hall set for AEGON Masters Tennis

The AEGON Masters Tennis comes to the Royal Albert Hall in London again this December for the culmination of the 2009 ATP Champions Tour.

The ATP Champions Tour is for those tennis stars that have retired from the hard slog of the ATP Tour but who still want to compete. The ATP Champions Tour is not for just anybody though as – in order to take part – a competitor must have reached number one in the world, reached the final of a singles Grand Slam tournament or been a singles player on a winning Davis Cup team.

The stringent entry requirements mean that only the very best will be appearing in the prestigious Kensington venue. Crowd favourite Goran Ivanisevic will be there as will other former Wimbledon winners Stefan Edberg and Pat Cash.
