Scotland manager Andy Robinson makes one change to his side from the one that was defeated 22-16 by England last week, with Geoff Cross coming in at tighthead prop. Kelly Brown is at no.8 despite suffering concussion last week, after a collision with 6ft 7in England centre Matt Banahan.

The Azzurri go into the encounter inspired by the 22-21 triumph over France in Rome, their first win in the competition this year, and make six changes going in to this match. Treviso’s Alberto Sgarbi replaces Gonzalo Garcia at centre while his club team-mate, Kris Burton, takes Luciano Orquera’s place at No.9 and Paul Derbyshire will earn his first Six Nations start in Scotland. Leicester prop, Martin Castrogiovanni is the only player in Italy’s first line that has kept his spot, with Leonardo Ghiraldini and Salvatore Perugini returning to the team. Quintin Geldenhuys will also start after being relegated to the replacements bench against France.

Italy are two points clear of Scotland after victory last week and the Scots hope to finish the tournament with some dignity after losing all five of their games so far. They haven’t ‘won’ the wooden spoon since 2007, finishing one place above Italy in the past three tournaments.

<a

Roger Federer again demonstrated why many believe he is the best player of all time.

Of course, Brian Dabul of Argentina was never going to be the most challenging of opponents, but the Swiss maestro’s near capitulation to Colombian ace Alejandro Falla at Wimbledon in July will have prevented complacency, and he was in fine form as he defeated Dabul 6-1 6-4 6-2, which included a wonderful through-the-legs winner in the third set.

The man who beat Federer in the French Open at Roland Garros had an enormous fright yesterday. isPermaLink="false">http://www.tixdaq.com/news/?p=9415

Wimbledon witnessed its biggest shock in recent years as Roger Federer crashed out to Czech tennis ace Tomas Berdych.

Although Roger Federer hasn’t been in the most tremendous form at this year’s Wimbledon, and some of the other top players have been playing outstanding tennis, few expected the six time champion to be defeated by Tomas Berdych yesterday. Even two sets to one down, most people expected the Swiss maestro to win the fourth set to at least push the match to five sets.

After all, Federer has been in the last seven Wimbledon finals. This is his earliest loss in the competition since 2002, and he will now drop to number 3 in the ATP World Rankings – his lowest position since 2003.

However, Berdych played tremendously and fully deserved his victory. There is now a Czech player in the semi-finals of both the ladies’ and men’s draws, though Petra Kvitová has a tough match against defending champion Serena Williams. Still, she can take inspiration from her compatriot’s shock victory yesterday.

Elsewhere yesterday, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray both came from a set down to defeat Robin Soderling and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga respectively, and will now meet in a tantalising semi-final tomorrow. Berdych will play Serbian tennis ace Novak Djokovic in the other semi-final, after the world number 3 beat Yen-Hsun Lu of Chinese Taipei in straight sets. Lu beat Andy Roddick in his previous match so could have been quite a banana skin for Djokovic, but the Serb played excellently to close out victory.

With neither Djokovic or Berdych having played in a Wimbledon final before, there will certainly be at least one new finalist at SW19 this year – and if Murray can overcome Nadal, there could be two. Naturally, excitement is building extremely fast as the competition reaches its latter stages, and many newspapers had pictures and headlines referring to Fred Perry this morning. Perry was of course the last British winner of the Wimbledon title back in 1936, but Murray seems wonderfully adept at ignoring the pressure heaped onto him by the UK media.

Last week there was a lot of coverage regarding the prices touts charged for Wimbledon tickets – especially if Murray was playing. A couple were widely reported to have bought tickets to last year’s semi-final between Murray and Roddick for £20,000. Given that currently debenture tickets are available from £1175, there are considerable savings to be made from the street prices.

<enclosure

In most of Murray’s recent Grand Slam exits he has been blown off the court by powerful players hitting the ball with tremendous accuracy.

However, the Frenchman’s form can be erratic, and should Murray be able to frustrate him with his excellent variety of spin and pace, he could emerge victorious.

Still, Britain’s number one player is in exceptional form and will be confident, but could at least drop his first set of the tournament.

Rafael Nadal plays Robin Soderling on Court One today, and it could be a tense encounter. In 2007 the two played a lengthy match during which Soderling mocked Nadal’s habit of picking at his shorts, and the Spaniard won an ill-tempered affair. Last year, Soderling became the only player to have defeated Nadal at the French Open, and he is hitting the ball as well as anybody at Wimbledon.

It is an interesting match, and one that is extremely difficult to call. Andy Roddick however, will play no further part.

Prior to yesterday, the biggest name players to have crashed out of Wimbledon were 8th seed Fernando Verdasco and 11th seed Marin Cilic. Last night, 9th seed David Ferrer was also eliminated after a five set loss to Robin Soderling, but that was no huge surprise given that the Swede was seeded higher at 6th – and Ferrer is far stronger on clay than grass.

The biggest shock yesterday was Andy Roddick’s loss to Yen-Hsun Lu of Chinese Taipei (formerly Taiwan). The American made it to last year’s final but did not take control of the game with either his serve or his forehand – usually his two finest assets.

After struggling in their first few matches to capture their very best form, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal won convincingly yesterday, and now look close to being back to their best.

On the women’s side, Kim Clijsters won the battle of Belgium as she came from one set down to defeat compatriot Justine Henin. After playing a fairly atrocious first set, Clijsters upped her game admirably to seal a victory, and interestingly Henin has not beaten her fellow Belgian since the pair emerged from retirement. Despite Clijsters’ excellent form, Venus and Serena Williams remain the favourites for the title.

Finally, Andy Murray continues his excellent form at Wimbledon 2010. He is the only player on the men’s side not to have dropped a set so far in the tournament, and overcame the winner of the AEGON Championships at Queens Club, Sam Querrey, with aplomb. Murray will next face the exciting Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the next round, and will hope to up his first serve percentage. The rest of the British number one’s game continues to fire nicely.

<a

He will take on American fast server Sam Querrey, who won the prestigious grass court tournament at Queens Club just prior to Wimbledon.

Still, Murray’s return is one of the best parts of his game – and arguably the best in the world – and Querrey will have to serve as well as he did in the AEGON Championships to progress, as well as overcome the mental barrier of a partisan crowd in favour of the British player.

With the championship entering its second week, <a

The American lost an epic fifth set 16-14 to finish runner up to the Swiss maestro, but in fact won more games than Federer overall – yet still ended up on the losing side.

This year the excitement has begun early. Roger Federer came back from two sets down to defeat the plucky Colombian Alejandro Falla, while Novak Djokovic and Taylor Dent broke last year’s record for the latest ever finish, as their five setter was decided at 22:58.

Still, the biggest drama was to be found on court 18. John Isner and Nicolas Mahut are still deadlocked in their first round match, and the battle will resume on a third day. The pair have broken multiple records in their incredible tussle, which was called to a halt at 59-59 in the fifth set due to bad light. At ten hours, it is the longest tennis match of all time, and indeed the fifth set of 118 games (so far) has lasted over seven hours!

Furthermore, both players have broken the record for the number of aces in a tennis match, which was previously held by Ivo Karlovic, who hit 78 in a Davis Cup tie for Croatia. Isner has 98, while Mahut has 95.

It is therefore no surprise that Wimbledon tickets continue to be so popular every year, but which player will win is anybody’s guess!

Elsewhere, British number one Andy Murray takes on Finland’s best tennis player Jarkko Nieminen in front of the Queen on Centre Court, so had better practise his bow! Caroline Wozniacki, Chang Kai-Chen, Rafael Nadal and Robin Haase will also perform in front of Britain’s monarch, making her first appearance at SW19 since 1977 – incidentally the last time a British player won the trophy!

<enclosure

Wawrinka did not come out on top however, and succumbed 6-7 6-1 2-6 7-6 6-3 to Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan. Other top seed to fall included Croat Marin Cilic and Spaniard Fernando Verdasco.

Federer, Djokovic and Davydenko will all play today, along with former champion Lleyton Hewitt, and will hope for smoother progress in their second round matches.

Yesterday, Britain’s Andy Murray earned himself the chance to play in front of the Queen with a straightforward victory over Czech player Jan Hajek, and has reportedly been practising his bow! British number one Andy Murray is seeded according to his number four ranking, while Jamie Baker was awarded a wildcard thanks to recent improved form – which includes a final appearance in Glasgow earlier this year.

The decision not to award wildcard entries to players such as serial failure Alex Bogdanovic though is understandable. Bogdanovic had been eliminated in the first round on all eight of his previous attempts, and finally the Lawn Tennis Association lost patience. He believes the Scot should cut speed from his first serve in order to increase accuracy, for although when it fires it is a potent weapon, the percentage is lower than many of the other top players.

He told the Independent that national pressure from the British public is affecting Murray’s game; as is disappointment for not showing his best form in the Australian Open final in January. While Murray’s intense training got him to a high of number 2 in the world, McEnroe indicated that better time management of his regime will prevent burnout. In the 2009 US Open, Murray appeared to be running on empty when he faced Croatian star Marin Cilic in the 4th round.

Finally, McEnroe hinted that he knew of a change in Murray’s court mentality. For a long time, Murray has played a counter-punching style; his movement and court artistry have long frustrated opponents into errors. McEnroe said he had heard of a move to a more aggressive game just inside the baseline – akin to Nikolay Davydenko, and this could prove a big step towards Andy Murray’s first Grand Slam title.

Wimbledon tickets are currently on sale for all courts on each day of the tournament, and having gone a round further each year he has played at SW19, Murray ought to be a certainty for the final. He will be seeded four for the biggest grass competition in tennis, meaning that he can only face Roger Federer or Rafael Nadal in the semi-final – should each of them get there.

<enclosure

Andy Murray lost the opening two sets against mercurial Frenchman Richard Gasquet in their first round match of the French Open, which immediately brought Gasquet’s capitulation at Wimbledon from the same position two years ago.

In SW19, crowd pressure and mental fatigue appeared to get to Gasquet, but at Roland Garros, his loss was more down to physical condition.

Having played and won an exhausting final in Nice against Fernando Verdasco on Saturday, Gasquet looked in excellent form ahead of the French Open. However, with just a day between that match and his clash with Murray, he barely had any time to recover.

Despite playing excellently for the first two sets, with multiple winners from his beautiful backhand, he could not maintain his level, and the British number one lives to fight another day. Andy Murray, Novak Djokovic, Juan Martin Del Potro and Roger Federer have all struggled to replicate their very best form, but Federer is the standout anomaly in that list.

Roger Federer has an innate ability to produce his best form in the big tournaments, which explains his outstanding record of 23 consecutive Grand Slam semi-finals. His losses to Tomas Berdych, Ernests Gulbis, and Alberto Montañés in recent competitions are highly unlikely to be replicated in the French Open later this month, and the fast courts at Roland Garros – and the current ATP Madrid Masters – will aid the resurrection of his form.

Andy Murray will do well to do the same on his weakest surface, but Djokovic has pulled out of Madrid citing breathing difficulties caused by allergies. Del Potro meanwhile is out for the long term with a wrist injury.

<a

The Spanish tennis ace will use the grass court event at London’s Queen’s Club to help him prepare for Wimbledon, which is the climax of the grass season. He will hope that this season follows a similar trajectory to 2008, when his fine form at Queen’s continued throughout Wimbledon fortnight and he emerged as champion – a stunning feat for someone many thought would never enjoy success on grass.

Last year, Andy Murray won the title and became the first Briton to win the title since 1938, and looks set to compete again this year. The star-studded field also should include Queen’s regulars Andy Roddick and Lleyton Hewitt.

<a

As a result, British number one Andy Murray is now the highest ranking player in the top half of the draw. He is seeded for a highly anticipated rematch against Marin Cilic on the horizon, the man he defeated in straight sets in the Australian Open semi-final, but will have to get past the potential banana skin in Mikhail Youzhny in the quarters first.

World number one player Federer has set no date for his return, but hopes to recover in time for the Masters 1000 events across America in March. Nadal and Del Potro also miss the event through injury, and so with just two members of the top five playing, the remaining players must view this as a real chance to take the title in Dubai, and early season form could hint to the next Grand Slam champion in Paris this May.

<a

He will face either Roger Federer or Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in Sunday’s final.

This year’s Australian Open has been a great start to 2010 for the Scot. He has turned around the negative play that hit his 2009 grand slam hopes and employed a much more attacking – and yet risk-free – all-round game. Though Murray started slowly against Cilic, his good form eventually came through and, in the end, he won convincingly 3-6 6-4 6-4 6-2.

Just one month into 2010, Murray is undoubtedly having a record-breaking year. Tim Henman could and should have won it but failed a whopping four times at the semi-final stage. Since Murray’s arrival on the scene, hopes have become stronger with each passing season, and 2010 is shaping up to be his finest year to date. With his fierce determination, a powerful serve and an almost unbeatable defence, Murray now has the tools to go on to claim what most consider as the biggest prize in tennis – the Wimbledon title.

The 2010 Wimbledon tennis championships are just months away and fans will be pleased to hear that Wimbledon tickets are already available to buy from tixdaq.com. The tournament – which is taking place at the London O2 Arena – kicked off yesterday (November 22), and is proving to be hugely popular with British tennis fans. Both Andy Murray and Roger Federer picked up wins against Juan Martin del Potro and Fernando Verdasco respectively on the opening day.

Rafael Nadal, who has had one of his worst season’s since joining the ATP tour was clearly no match for an in-form Robin Soderling who disposed of the former world number one in straight sets. Robin Soderling was not originally due to take part in the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, however, an injury to Andy Roddick meant that the number nine seed was called up to fill the empty spot.

The second of today’s singles matches sees Novak Djokovic take on Nikolay Davydenko. Novak Djokovic has been in fine form of late and he is the bookies’ favourite.

Tomorrow sees Juan Martin Del Potro v Fernando Verdasco followed by Andy Murray taking on the world number one, Roger Federer.

Tixdaq can confirm that tickets are still available to all of the remaining days of the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, including the final which is set to take place next Sunday (November 29).

<a
