David Haye vs Dereck Chisora Tickets Available For Grudge Fight

British heavyweights Dereck Chisora and David Haye are poised to face-off in a July grudge match unlikely to be sanctioned by British boxing chiefs, it was confirmed on Tuesday, with tickets already on sale.

Chisora was stripped of his licence in March after an ugly press conference brawl with Haye following his unsuccessful heavyweight title bout against reigning world champion Vitali Klitschko the previous month.

Haye does not hold a valid licence to box in Britain after announcing his retirement last year.

However the former world champion is likely to face an uphill battle to regain his right to fight given the hardline stance by the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBOC) against Chisora.

But Chisora’s promoter Frank Warren has confirmed that a fight against Haye would now go ahead at the home of West Ham football club in east London in July.

Warren told the BBC that the fight would be licensed by the Luxembourg boxing association after Chisora’s appeal against his suspension was put back until July.

“The hearing was put back to July so Dereck will have effectively been out of the ring for six months and that equates, if he was a footballer, to being out of action for 24 matches,” Warren told BBC Radio Five Live.

“He has lost half of his purse in sanctions and costs since the Klitschko fight.

“He has no qualifications, the next thing for him to do would be to sign on (for state unemployment benefits).

“He is not banned from boxing. The fight has been licenced by the governing body in Luxembourg, which has the same standards as the British Boxing Board of Control.

“It is the biggest fight of the year and the fact of the matter is that the fight is legal, lawful and will go ahead.”

Any fight involving Chisora and Haye is likely to be the biggest British heavyweight bout since Lennox Lewis fought Frank Bruno in 1993.

Boxing legend Muhammad Ali has led the tributes to Sir Henry Cooper following the British Heavyweight’s death at the age of 76

Former world heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali said: “I am at a loss for words over the death of my friend.

“Henry always had a smile for me; a warm and embracing smile. It was always a pleasure being in Henry’s company.

“I will miss my old friend. He was a great fighter and a gentleman.”

Britain’s newest boxing star, WBA heavyweight champion David Haye, also said Cooper contributed to his success.

“He was at all the charity dinners and what-not and we’d talk to each other and he’d give me advice and wish me luck, give me his opinion on what he thought I should do and it was always sound advice.” Said Haye.

“He’d let you know his opinion – whether you wanted to hear it or not! – and I believe the advice he’s given me over the years is working out because I’m now the heavyweight champion of the world.”

Manny Pacquiao impresses in training

Manny Pacquiao has never prepared for a fight better in the run up to facing Shane Mosley on May 7th, according to trainer Freddie Roach.

Roach has been a little critical of his fighter’s focus in recent training sessions as the Filipino has won a seat in his national congress. But it seems as though Pacquiao has put the Las Vegas showdown at the top of his priorities.

“This is the best start we’ve ever had to a training camp,” Roach told reporters at his Wild Card Boxing Club in Hollywood, California. “His focus has been great the whole way through.

“It’s probably one of the least distracted we’ve ever been in training camp and he’s doing great. He’s concentrating on the fight, he’s not taking this guy lightly at all and he’s right where I want him to be.”

David Haye to keep October retirement promise

David Haye has once again stated his desire to retire from Boxing in October, even if it means he will never be able to fight Vitali Klitschko.

Haye will take on IBF/WBO champion Wladimir Klitschko in July, with a victory possibly leading to a match with WBC champion Vitali. However, Vitali is scheduled to take on Tomasz Adamek in September and therefore would not be able to take on Haye until 2012. Unless Haye changes his plans, his fight with Wladmir will be his last as he is adamant that he will retire in October before he turns 31.

In a meeting with Wladmir in Manhattan yesterday, Haye said: “I’ve set that date [retiring in October when Haye turns 31] from when I was young and I always try to stick to my goals. You have timelines and if you achieve what you want to achieve in those timelines why not stick to your goals?”

Boxing legend tips David Haye for greatness

Legendary boxing trainer Angelo Dundee has tipped David Haye to see off Wladimir Klitschko on his way to achieving greatness.

Dundee, who also trained Muhammed Ali, has been watching Haye since he began training in the Fifth Street Gym in Miami.

Despite approaching 90, Dundee still keeps tabs on his gym’s boxers. He admitted that Haye has caught his eye.

“I watched him and he was training in my Fifth Street Gym,” Dundee told the BBC.

“I was pleased – I felt like he belonged right to that gym. He’s an interesting human being. It was my first time being in person with the kid. I’m impressed because I like the way he handles himself and I like the people around him. There’s much more than meets the eye.”

Shane Mosley confident ahead of Manny Pacquiao fight

Shane Mosley has confidently predicted that he will take on Floyd Mayweather Jnr after his fight with Manny Pacquiao, and then retire.

Mosley takes on Pacquiao at the MGM Grand on May 7th, which will mark one year since his points defeat to Mayweather. Mosley, 39, is looking to bow out of boxing on a high note, having not won a bout since 2009.

Once discussed as the best pound-for-pound boxer around, Mosley has suffered a steep decline, but still believes he can repair his bruised ego.

“I have to give it my 100% all, give it everything I got, beat Pacquiao, we can do a rematch, fight Mayweather, and I think that’s pretty much it for me,” Mosley told the On the Ropes radio show. “Then I will go off and I will stop helping these young fighters become world champions and get into another side of the business.”

Amir Khan accuses broadcasters of lacking support

Amir Khan has hit back in the row over the broadcasting of Saturdays WBA light-welterweight bout against Paul McCloskey, accusing British broadcasters of lacking support.

The fight, which was originally billed to be shown on Sky Box Office, will now be broadcast by small time pay-per-view channel Primetime.

Kahn said: “Sky were at first showing their support and then all of a sudden things went downhill and they pulled out of the fight.

“I really thought this would have been a massive fight, especially after I had a great fight last year and won the best fight of the year, but it’s one of those things.”

Amir Khan camp is a shambles, says Paul McCloskey’s promoter

Paul McCloskey’s promoter Eddie Hearn has lashed out at the Amir Khan camp after they turned down an offer to show the fight on Sky Sports 3.

The bout will instead be shown on cable channel Primetime, which has led to claims from Hearn that Khan has “killed” his credibility.

“This whole thing has been a shambles from start to finish,” Hearn told ESPN. “It is commercial suicide. Sky is the most important television station in the UK when it comes to boxing, and in my opinion this has killed Khan’s credibility here.

“I feel sorry for Amir Khan. It was obviously bad news that he had to take a cut in moving from Sky Box Office to Sky Sports 3. He would probably have got 80-to-100,000 pay-per-view buys on Sky Box Office, but he would probably have had 700,000 watching on Sky Sports 3.

“This was the chance to build him again with a much bigger UK audience. I doubt whether he will even get 5,000 buys on Primetime, which has no marketing budget at all for the event.”

Wladimir Klitschko is fit to fight, says David Haye

Wladimir Klitschko has been passed fit for his heavyweight title unification bout in the summer, according to his opponent David Haye.

After Wladimir pulled out of a bout against Dereck Chisora in April, there were concerns over the Ukrainian’s fitness. It had even been speculated that Wladimir’s brother, Vitali, would step in to fight Haye.

However, Haye told BBC Radio 5 live: “I know it’s Wladimir I am fighting, he is fit to fight and ready to go.”

WBA champion Haye will face IBF and WBO holder Klitschko on 25 June or 2 July.

Amir Khan is desperate to prove he is the best boxer in his class, and aims to make his fight against Paul McCloskey an occasion to remember.

Khan, 24, takes on McCloskey on April 16th at the MEN Arena in Manchester. A victory for Khan would most probably lead to a unification bout against WBC and WBO title-holder Tim Bradley in the summer.

Tinie Tempah secures lucrative advertising job

The rapper has penned an endorsement deal with energy drink Lucozade worth a whopping £100,000, apparently beating Kanye West on his way to landing the contract.

On his new role, which was previously filled by footballer John Barnes in the 90s, Tinie says: “I am too young to remember the John Barnes adverts but I hear he wasn’t a bad rapper. I reckon I could kick the bottle in the bin if I was asked. It’s massive. They’ve always done such huge adverts. And I DO drink Lucozade, more so in the gym. I’m not just saying that, I wouldn’t endorse something I didn’t like.”

Tinie recently flew out to LA to shoot the commercials, which are due to be aired next month. The ads will see him joined by boxing champion David Haye, Man United’s Rio Ferdinand and cricketer Monty Panesar.

David Haye lays into Wladimir Klitschko

David Haye has set his sights on knocking out IBF and WBO champion Wladimir Klitschko when the two meet in either June or July this year.

Haye, the WBA champion, told Fight Hype: “I don’t like him as a person; I don’t like the way he does business. I can’t wait to see him unconscious, twitching on the canvas.”

When asked if he has ever fought someone he disliked as much as Wladimir, Haye said: “My hatred is at an all-time high and I’m looking to take it out on his big head.”

Paul McCloskey plays down Amir Khan’s training benefits

Paul McCloskey has said he is unconcerned that Amir Khan has the benefit of sparring with pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao.

McCloskey told Sky Sports: “I’m completely different to Pacquiao, Manny’s an aggressive, come forward boxer who punches in bunches. I’m a slick mover, a thinker.”

McCloskey, an unbeaten European champion, will take on Khan for the WBA 140 pound title on April 16th an the MEN Arena.

David Haye may become ‘super champion’

Boxing organisers may bump David Haye up to ‘super champion’ status in order to allow other boxers to fight for the ‘regular’ title.

Haye should have a mandatory bout against challenger Ruslan Chagaev, but will instead fight Wladimir Klitschko for his IBF and WBO titles.

According to World Boxing News, Haye may well be elevated to ‘super champion’ status so that Chagaev will have his chance to fight for a title. Possible opponents could be unbeaten Russian Alexander Povetkin and 38 year-old Jean-Marc Mormeck of France.

Long Run wins Cheltenham Gold Cup thriller

It proved to be a thrilling race with one of three former champions, Kauto Star, Denman or Imperial Commander, looking likely to take first place until the last half mile, when Long Run, who was the 7-2 favourite, jumped to the front of the pack at the last minute to claim gold.

Speaking after the race, jockey Sam Waley-Cohen said: “He’s a whole lot better than I thought he was. That’s a very special feeling and he’s a very special horse”. Denman finished the race in second position, while Kauto Star completed the top three.

Long Run made his British racing debut in December 2009 at the Feltham Chase on Boxing Day. Jockey sam Waley-Cohen becomes the first amateur jockey to win in 30 years.

Former undisputed heavyweight champion Mike Tyson has described himself as a ‘fat crackhead, while appearing US entertainment show, Access Hollywood.

The boxer, known as ‘Iron Mike’, has become quite the comedian in recent years, even making an appearance in the hugely popular film, ‘The Hangover’.

Speaking about how he got back into fighting shape, Mike said, ‘I became a vegan and I lost a 140 pounds. I always thought if you did cocaine, you stayed skinny, I didn’t know you’d turn into a fat crackhead.’

Amir Khan says he feels ‘much stronger’ after change in diet

Amir Khan has broken the silence over his split with controversial conditional trainer, Alex Ariza.

Ariza, known for working with boxers such as Manny Pacquiao, helped Khan bulk up with a mix of supplements and power shakes. But now Khan is working with Michael Vale, who prefers a more organic approach.

“It was nothing big,” Khan told The Observer. “At the end of the day, we just grew apart. Also, he was with Manny at the same time, and I needed a full-time conditioner.”

Khan is currently in the Philippines training for the fourth defence of his WBA light-welterweight title against Irishman Paul McCloskey in Manchester on 16 April.

If successful, a possible unification fight against Tim Bradley could be scheduled. It has already been rumoured to have been decided to take place on July 23rd in Las Vegas

Don King claims he is the godfather of hip-hop

Legendary boxing promoter Don King has claimed that his links with musicians, including James Brown, earn him the title of ‘Godfather of Hip-Hop.’

Known worldwide for organizing “The Rumble in the Jungle” and the “Thrilla in Manilla,” and promoting the careers of Muhammad Ali, Evander Holyfield and Mike Tyson, King now says he has another claim to fame.

King told Sean Sport Magazine: “James Brown was the “Godfather of Soul”; Don King was the “Godfather of Hip Hop.”

King explained: “We changed the game. The game used to be cup and hold, and hold tight and don’t let go! So the thing here that you have to understand is we are like when Shakespeare and them were going round and playing on a ukulele or little banjo and they would tell the state of the union. All the rappers would tell the story of the community and the story of the ghetto, the stories and of the high profiling.”

Heavyweight boxing champion David Haye has been casting his eye over the forthcoming race between Kauto Star and Denman in Cheltenham Festival’s Gold Cup this March, and compared it to George Foreman and Muhammad Ali’s famous 1974 duel in Zaire: Rumble In The Jungle. Haye’s analogy refers to two rivals at the peak of their powers, and the race is predicted to be so tight that he would not commit to speculating on which horse will come out on top.

However, David Haye has his own rivalry to worry about: although much has been said of a potential clash with either of the Klitschko brothers, before that fight can be arranged Haye must defend his WBA belt against the American John Ruiz at Manchester’s Evening News Arena on April 3rd 2010.

One of the great dates of the football season in England is Boxing Day.

Tottenham are on cloud nine after dispatching Wigan Athletic with the second largest margin of victory in Barclays Premier League history.

Only Manchester United’s 9-0 demolition of Ipswich Town in 1995 is greater than the thrashing handed out by the north London team on Sunday. The hero of the day was Jermain Defoe. The England striker bagged a remarkable five goals in a mere 36 minutes to take home the match ball and shoot to the top of the goalscoring charts.

In all, nine goals were scored in the second-half as Peter Crouch’s headed opener was all that separated the sides at half-time and three goals were scored in the last three minutes of the match alone.

Wigan have had an erratic campaign so far under new coach Roberto Martinez. They opened the season with a win away at Aston Villa and destroyed Chelsea’s 100% record by betting the leaders 3-1 at the DW Stadium. Conversely they also gave Portsmouth their first win of the season when they got hammered 4-0 at Fratton Park and this latest annihilation will certainly leave the coaching staff scratching their heads.

Portsmouth relying on seasonal goodwill

Portsmouth FC will be glad to have got their first win of the season under their belts as they are about to enter an extremely demanding phase of the campaign.

The festive season is something of an endurance test for all teams but the next few weeks look tougher than usual for the south coast club and could prove pivotal in struggle for Premier League survival.

The period starts with the visit of champions Manchester United on 28^th December and is followed a week later with what looks to be a must-win game at home to Burnley.

December might seem a bit early to start talking about relegation six-pointers but in the precarious position that Portsmouth find themselves in they surely have to emerge from that clash with three points.

After a trip to Sunderland, Manager Paul Hart then takes his players to Stamford Bridge to take on Carlo Ancelotti and his Chelsea team on Wednesday 16^th December and will treat any points picked up there as a bonus.

Three days later they return to Fratton Park to take on Liverpool who, though not having the greatest of seasons, will be another massive test.

Pompey finish 2009 with two tough looking fixtures against London opposition. First they go to Upton Park on Boxing Day to take on a West Ham side that finds itself in the lower reaches of the table while on the 28^th Arsenal’s footballing fantasistas arrive on the south coast.

It certainly looks to be a key month in their season and Portsmouth will be hoping for a few seasonal gifts to come their way.

Festive fun in the Premier League

The Barclays Premier League returns to action after a two week break to accommodate the playoffs for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa and there are plenty of tickets available to some very big matches.

November 28^thsees Aston Villa play host to Harry Redknapp’s Tottenham with both teams keen to muscle in on a top four finish.

The following day (29^th) sees a titanic clash between two of the title favourites at the Emirates Stadium when Arsenal face Chelsea. When this fixture took place last year the Blues ran out 4-1 winners though expect it to be a much closer affair this time round.

December 5^th sees a real grudge match take place in east London as Manchester United travel to West Ham United. While they may currently be at opposite ends of the table there is no love lost between the two clubs and these encounters are always fiery.

On the south coast that day there is what might prove to be a relegation six-pointer between Portsmouth and Burnley. That might be a bit harsh on the Lancastrians looking at their excellent start to the season but their away form is desperately poor and they will need to improve in that area if they are to survive in the Barclays Premier League.

There’s a repeat of last season’s FA Cup final on December 12^th as Chelsea welcome Everton to Stamford Bridge. While the Londoners lifted the famous old trophy in May both their league meetings with the Liverpudlians in the last campaign ended in closely contested draws.

Boxing Day sees a compelling capital clash as Fulham face Tottenham at Craven Cottage. As both teams like to play football in the proper way it promises to serve up a real festive treat.

December finishes with a local derby as Roy Hodgson takes his Fulham side across SW6 to face Chelsea in another mouth-watering affair.

Haye set for record-breaking bout

David Haye’s is in line for a block-busting fight at a large British venue with summer 2010 pencilled in for the occasion.

The Bermondsey man took the WBA world heavyweight title from Nikolay Valuev after winning a split-decision in Nuremberg and is now lining up a mega-fight for the middle of next year against one of the Klitschko brothers.

He is duty-bound to fight John Ruiz in his next outing as the American stepped aside to allow the fight between Haye and Valuev to take place in return for a large payoff and a first crack at the victor.

Assuming Haye – as expected – dispatches the former world champion he will then be in the position to book a stadium of his choice for a fight against either Wladimir or Vitali Klitschko.

Millwall’s New Den has been mooted as he is a local boy and a noted Lions fan and Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge was originally favoured for the abandoned fight with Wladimir Klitschko last summer so therefore must be considered to be a candidate.

There is even talk of staging the fight at Wembley – making it the first boxing event staged on the hallowed turf since the stadium was rebuilt – which would surely shatter all previous box office records for a bout in the UK.

Amir Khan ready for his first title defence

Amir Khan will defend his WBA world light-welterweight title against Dimitry Salita on December 5.

The bout will be Khan’s first fight since he won the title with a unanimous decision against Andreas Kotelnik at the MEN Arena, Manchester in July.

The former Olympic silver medallist will be taking on the Ukrainian boxer at the Metro Radio Arena in Newcastle and would be well-advised not to take the bout lightly.

Salita has an unblemished record with 30 victories in as many fights in his professional career with 16 knockouts. Although he may not have a particularly high profile in the wider boxing community he will be keen to upset the odds by handing the Bolton man the second defeat of his career.

Khan is unlikely to be complacent though after he was taught a salutary lesson by Breidis Prescott in June last year. The heavy-hitting Colombian was seen as Khan’s first real test since joining the professional ranks amid criticism that his promoter Frank Warren had been hand-feeding his charge sub-standard opposition.

After just 54 seconds Khan had been knocked out, dismantled by his more experienced opponent. A glass jaw and lack of defensive nous was cited as the reason for his spectacular defeat and legendary trainer Freddie Roach was brought in to rescue the young pugilist’s career.

Khan has responded well to Roach’s teachings and certainly looks a more rounded boxer than the one that entered the ring against Prescott.

Whatever happens, it will be a fight not to be missed.
