X-Factor’s in-built train-wreck performers Jon and Edward Grimes (yes, they have surnames) were voted off X-Factor last night, leaving just five acts left in the run-up to the X-Factor final show at Christmas, which is to be mandatorily shown in every household in the UK.  The news was greeted with sighs of relief from most of the panel and most of everybody else too, but especially from Simon Cowell, who had earlier sworn to leave the country if “Jedward” won the competition.  The British public rose to this challenge by continuing to vote off everyone else, giving Jedward the chance to really shine in last night’s Wham!-themed evening.  But despite looking like ’80s throwbacks ideal for covering this sort of lightweight retro pop, Jedward didn’t make hay, attempting with the other finalists a medley of Wham! hits, notably including I’m Your Man in which they sung with verve, gusto, and a dose of irony – but not a lot in the way of tonal accuracy.

The public had had enough, and last night joined Olly Murs in receiving the lowest number of public votes, meaning they entered the head-to-head elimination round, or Sing-Off Of Death.  Olly Murs chose Eric Clapton’s Wonderful Tonight, whilst John and Edward picked No Matter What by fellow countrymen Boyzone – a heartfelt rendition but nevertheless one that lacked the “X-factor”.  Dannii Minogue held the casting vote, and chose to retain Olly Murs, thus ending the bravaura run of success enjoyed by the twins.  One other happy corollary of this was that the bloggers and social commentators of Britain’s supposedly highbrow broadsheets are now denied a signficant source of material, so will have to return to writing proper news instead of irritatingly condescending post-modern ironic pieces about modern culture.  Amen to that.

Beyonce teams up with sponsor to give away 13,000 tickets to London's O2 Arena

Beyonce and chewing gum brand Trident have themed up to offer a sponsorship funded free concert at the London O2 Arena on November 15.

The sponsorship give away will see 13,000 tickets presented to fans who buy packets of Trident gum and enter into a weekly draw at Tridentunwrapped.co.uk. Exactly 1,000 tickets for the gig will be given away each week as part of the promotion.

Further opportunities to win free VIP tickets to the gig via packets of the gum are also set to be announced in the near future.

The Free Beyonce Concert at London’s O2 Arena (November 15) will follow the a pre-summer UK tour for R ‘n’ B singer.

Johnny Vaughan and Lisa Snowdon will announce the lineup for Capital FM's Summertime Ball

Arsenal FC’s Emirates Stadium will host the first ever Capital FM Summertime Ball concert on 7 June.

The initial lineup for the Capital FM Summertime Ball is due to be announced on Johnny Vaughan and Lisa Snowdon’s breakfast show on 27 April and Capital FM Summertime Ball tickets go on sale on the same day. Capital FM will donate £100,000 of proceeds to the charity Help a London Child.

At least 15 acts confirmed to appear at the Capital FM Summertime Ball will be announced in the coming weeks and will perform in front of a crowd of up to 55,000. Capital FM will broadcast live from Arsenal FC’s Emirates Stadium on 7 June from 10am – 10pm.

Top pop acts from the UK and overseas are expected following the success of Capital FM’s Jingle Bell Ball held last December at the London O2 Arena. Some of the acts who performed were The Saturdays, Anastacia and Boyzone, and all of these acts are touring the UK from May.

Also on tour from 26 June is Bruce Springsteen who performed the first music event ever held at Arsenal FC’s Emirates Stadium last May.

This week, the race for the UK albums chart crown has been won by Ronan Keating. The Boyzone star’s new album, Songs for My Mother, outsold the competition to claim the top spot. The album was released last Monday in time for fans to seek out the perfect Mother’s Day gift.

Second place went to Annie Lennox who hung on for a second week with her latest release. Kings of Leon, who have now spent more than six months in the UK albums chart, claimed third place while Faryl and Take That made up the top five.

Last week’s chart toppers, U2, fell five places to number six. The recently released U2 album, No Line on the Horizon, spent two weeks at the top of the chart before being replaced by fellow Irish man, Ronan Keating.

Acts including Lady Gaga, Kelly Clarkson, Bette Midler and Lionel Richie make up this week’s top ten.

Kings of Leon play a series of massive shows at the London O2 Arena and the Manchester Evening News Arena in June. Kings of Leon tickets are available from £90.

The 2009 Take That tour kicks off at the Sunderland Stadium of Light on June 5 before visiting Coventry Ricoh Arena, Cardiff Millennium Stadium, Glasgow Hampden Park and Lancashire County Cricket Ground.
