isPermaLink="false">http://www.tixdaq.com/news/?p=22019

Chelsea striker Fernando Torres says Liverpool's future is not bright.

In January, Liverpool sold their star striker Fernando Torres to Chelsea for the astronomical sum of £50m.

It was a fractious departure for the former fan favourite, and Liverpool fans burned his shirt in front of a media baying for such visual symbolism.

Now, it appears Torres wants to tell his side of the story, and his interview with Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet doesn’t make the most pleasant reading for Liverpool fans.

“Liverpool’s future isn’t looking bright,” explained Torres.

“I always gave them a 100%, but it was a difficult situation. Even though I felt like I was a big part of the club, you have to also look after your personal ambitions.

“For me, that is winning trophies and unfortunately that doesn’t look like a possibility for them.

“It’s no coincidence that Xabi Alonso, Javier Mascherano and myself all left Liverpool. It was always about ambition.

“I played for Liverpool for years and had some great moments, but when a club like Chelsea, with bigger potential, come calling, it’s hard to say no – especially when it looked impossible to win the league for Liverpool.

“I understood the supporters’ frustration but it was very difficult to see them burn my shirt.”

Xabi Alonso left Liverpool because after his worst season at Anfield, Rafa Benitez attempted to replace him with Gareth Barry.

The Spain midfielder promptly showed why that would have been a mistake with his performances in the next campaign, becoming the metronome of the side.

Javier Mascherano was a different matter, but with all the time that has passed it is surprising that Torres has elected to resurrect the debate, for it will likely only raise more animosity.

<a

But United boss Ferguson has sympathised with the dilemma that Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti is facing.

“I didn’t see how they could leave him out having signed him for that much money,” said Ferguson.

“It’s not working at moment but he’s young and there are more seasons.”

Ferguson added: “Chelsea had an opportunity to sign Torres and I can’t think of a club that would not have wanted the striker. It was a fantastic bit of business.”

<a

Real Madrid under Mourinho, is someone that could handle him and get the best out of him.

“It is painful to say that that the best player you have, which he is at United, he is better off trying something new. United will probably not sell him to another English club, but a change of scenery would help.”

Rooney was forced to sit out of Manchester United’s 2-0 win over Fulham, with the victory maintaining their seven-point advantage at the top of the table.

Manchester United are now 1/7 in the Premier League odds, but their first immediate focus will be ensuring their qualification to the Champions League semi-finals at the expense of Chelsea, with Rooney able to take part in the second leg.

<a

It will be a magnificent atmosphere there.”

United go into Wednesday’s first leg without an away win over Chelsea for nine years. On 1 March they lost 2-1 at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League and their captain Nemanja Vidic was sent off.

Ferguson played down that record and stated: “The last few years have been poor in terms of results but we have played well.”

But Vidic believes Chelsea’s recent record against his team gives them the advantage.

“They have an edge because they had good ones [results] against us,” said Vidic. But this is the Champions League. The name of the game on Wednesday is to get an away goal. Our performances at Chelsea in the last two or three years have been really good. We have played some good football but in the end, we didn’t get good results. Now I am thinking we should play badly and win.”

<a

Inter lost the Milan derby 3-0 on Saturday and Schalke’s season has been a bit of a shambles, with the team currently sat in 11th place and gaining half the points of league leaders Borussia Dortmund. Schalke’s game on Friday was also called off in the 88th minute when the referee was hit by a cup full of beer. Schalke were 2-0 up against St. Pauli.

Schalke’s progress to the quarter-finals comes as a surprise given their domestic form, but with an attacking line-up that includes Klaas Jan Huntelaar, Jefferson Farfan, Angelos Charisteas and Raul, they’ve got the experience in the squad.

Inter Milan will not emulate their success last season, when Jose Mourinho led them to a famous treble winning season. But the manner in which they beat Bayern Munich to progress to the quater-finals shouldn’t be underestimated. After losing the home leg 1-0, Inter then fell further behind in the second leg before producing an astonishing combeack to win 3-2 on the night and go through on away goals.

Whoever comes out victorious in this tie will face either Chelsea or Manchester United.

Chelsea face Manchester United in a repeat of the 2008 Champions League Final, a game that Manchester United won on penalties. A tight and tense affair, this quarter-final clash is likely to be a similar contest as both teams have excellent defensive records in this season’s campaign.

Chelsea progressed to this stage through an easy win over a Copenhagen side who weren’t match fit. It is the close season in Denmark and Chelsea strolled through the game with relative ease, despite the 0-0 second leg draw. Chelsea’s season started as the previous one finished, obliterating opponents off the park and seemingly on their way to keeping the Premier League title. But November saw a slump in form and it’s one they have never really recovered from. The £50m addition of Fernando Torres was a huge statement of intent, but his eight games are yet to produce a goal.

It is likely that manager Carlo Ancelotti will go with Didier Drogba ahead of Fernando Torres. The Chelsea players are still getting to grips with the Spaniard and although he has been praised for his movement off the ball, Chelsea are a more formidable unit with a front three of Anelka, Malouda and Drogba.

Manchester United are 11 points clear of Chelsea in the Premier League and well on their way to regaining the title. But a Champions league quarter-final is different – domestic dominance shouldn’t play too heavy a part in this game. United will be boosted by Wayne Rooney showing signs of himself with a hat-trick against West Ham yesterday – both with the goals and the foul mouthed celebration for the third. Rio Ferdinand was back in training and his return alongside Nemanja Vidic will be a massive boost should he play. Chris Smalling has equipped himself well this season but if Rio doesn’t make it, this game will be his biggest test yet.

Should Manchester United win the tie, Chelsea will face a trophy-less season and Carlo Ancelotti will be under increased pressure. Owner Roman Ambramovich is desperate to see the Champions League in London but if any manager can do it, three time winner Carlo Ancelotti can.

<a

Mario thinks he could be a fantastic player. When he does something stupid like that, it’s difficult for me”.

Midfielder Nigel de Jong concurred with his manager. “He is a young boy of 20 and he has to learn from his mistakes,” said the Dutch international. “I told him. Everyone told him. He is still part of the squad and has a lot of potential. He is a very good player but has to realise, on a professional level, you sometimes have to change your mentality”.

Balotelli, 20, who suffers from a rare allergy to grass, was shown a straight red card for a high footed challenge on Goran Popov. Manchester City face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge this Sunday and a loss would see them effectively out of the title race.

http://www.tixdaq.com/news/?p=15797

The draw takes place in Nyon, Switzerland, on Friday the 18th of March.

All eyes will be on Nyon on Friday the 18th of March as the draw for the quarter- final stage of the 2010/2011 UEFA Champions League takes place. All 8 teams have been confirmed and there are some potentially mouthwatering ties. Real Madrid have qualified for this stage for the first time in a staggering seven years, keeping boss Jose Mourinho on course to win a third Champions League crown at three different clubs. Schalke have a new manager to lead them into the last eight, with Ralf Rangnick replacing the sacked Felix Magath. Carlo Ancelotti is looking for his third Champions League title as a manager and his first as Chelsea boss, Harry Redknapp leads Tottenham into the last eight for the first time in 50 years and Sir Alex Ferguson still has hopes of a Manchester United treble. England’s three remaining clubs will fancy their chances as no Premier League side has lost at home in the competition in 18 outings. The possibility of an El Clasico will excite fans the world over, particularly as Mourinho would like to exact revenge on Barca following Madrid’s 5-0 humiliation earlier in the season. Mourinho himself is keener to avoid former employers Chelsea and Inter; the holders having completed a remarkable comeback away to Bayern Munich from a seemingly unassailable position. Unbeaten on home soil in all competitions since October 2008, the Ukrainian champions Shakhtar Donetsk hold a formidable record at the Donbass Arena. Managers and players have stated preferences for who they face in the quarter-final, but whatever draw comes up, it’s sure to be 4 pulsating games. The ties will be played on 5/6 and 12/13 of April. The semi-final pairings will also be decided, with the games taking place on 26/27 April and 3/4 May. The final will takes place on Saturday the 28th of May at Wembley Stadium in London.

<a

City’s injury problems are easing off, with James Milner returning to the side and Adam Johnson seemingly days away from playing having returned to training, whilst Chelsea welcomed back Yossi Benayoun and defender Alex in training this week.

Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti confirmed that Fernando Torres, Michael Essien and Florent Malouda, all benched in the midweek 0-0 draw against FC Copenhagen, will start on Sunday. Ancelotti will be encouraged by better performances from Chelsea in recent weeks, including the 2-1 victory over Manchester United and the progression to the Champions League quarter final, and he will hope 50m signing Fernando Torres can finally score in a blue shirt.

“It’s important we win to clarify our position in the table”, said Ancelotti. “At the moment, our position is not so clear. After this game, it’ll be clear what we’re going to do in the Premier League.”

Roberto Mancini’s City men sit two points clear of Chelsea in the table and would like to cement their place in the top 4 with victory over the reigning champions. Mancini is somewhat of a nemesis for Ancelotti; City have won their last three games against Chelsea, continuing his good record against Ancelotti from when the pair were at AC and Inter respectively.

Whether Mancini adopts his familiar tactic against the bigger teams of playing for a 0-0, or goes with the slightly more adventurous style he used in the loss away at Manchester United, is a decision that comes after City’s exit from the Europe League to Dynamo Kiev, leaving them with only the Premier League to fight for.

Mario Balotelli is likely to be dropped from the City side following his petulant red card in the Europa League and David Luiz is expected back in the Chelsea side after being cup-tied against Copenhagen.

Whether both sides still stand a realistic chance of winning the title is arguable but neither team will want to lose points in the crucial run up to the end of the season. The extra days’ rest that Chelsea have before the game may prove decisive.

<a

An embarrassing loss to Wolves, a laboured victory over Crawley Town, and a crucial defeat to Chelsea may suggest it is a good time to face the red devils. Upcoming games against Liverpool and Marseille could also mean Sir Alex Ferguson may take his eye off the FA Cup.

Arsenal are also in an erratic run of form. A team that beat Barcelona could only draw with Leyton Orient in the FA Cup four days later. They may have smashed Orient 5-0 in the replay at the Emirates, but only after a devastating loss to Birmingham in the Carling Cup Final. Similar to United, the Gunners also have a huge match four days before the quarter-final with a visit to Barcelona.

Manchester United play to win in every competition, but it may be that Arsenal can spring a surprise as they are desperate to win some silverware. Both teams are fighting hard in the league and it could well be that whoever rolls the dice and brings out the big players, rather than too many reserves, will progress to the semi-finals.

Tickets for all football competitions, domestic and European, are available.

<object

Currently, just three points seperate third place Manchester City from fifth place Tottenham.

Chelsea have seemingly overcome the huge blip which saw their league position tumble. An expensive January transfer window has led to better performances from Carlo Ancelotti’s side, although they still have not hit top gear yet, as shown by the loss against Liverpool and draw against Fulham. Chelsea are desperate for inspiration from £50 million man Fernando Torres . Despite this, they still overcame Manchester United on Tuesday, coming from a goal down and demonstrating their desire to reclaim their crown.

Manchester City are not exactly in top form either, winning only one of their last five league games. Their talented squad appears to be gelling well, however, and they have plenty of strength and depth to call upon as the end of season games pile up. Compare and buy Barclays Premier League tickets online.

There will be a clear indication which way the race for fourth in the Barclays Premier League will go tonight as the two main contenders Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur face each other. A Tottenham win in the penultimate match of the season would send them four points clear of City – an unassailable lead.

Both sides have away fixtures against bottom half sides in their final match of the season that they will be expected to win; Manchester City face West Ham, while Spurs take on relegated Burnley. Presuming both Champions League contenders gain victory against these sides – neither of which has anything left to play for, the match against Tottenham is Manchester City’s last chance to overtake their north London rivals.

For Roberto Mancini’s side then, victory is vital – especially given that this is their last match at Eastlands, where they boast a very strong record. Tottenham are somewhat shaky on the road, but are in good form ahead of the clash. Spurs have won eight of their last ten league matches – a run that includes successive matches against Arsenal and Chelsea.

In the reverse fixture between these sides in December, Tottenham won 3-0 in a convincing performance. However, this match will be a different kettle of fish entirely. Manchester City have changed their manager, added the signings of Adam Johnson and Patrick Vieira, and there is far more at stake this time around. The game may come down to which manager and team can hold their nerve.

http://www.tixdaq.com/news/?p=8061

Blackburn travel to Portsmouth in good form next Saturday. Compare and buy Portsmouth vs Blackburn tickets online.

Blackburn Rovers manager Sam Allardyce recently claimed that if the Barclays Premier League table was only based on home form, his side would be in the top four. He wasn’t quite right, as Blackburn would be seventh behind Tottenham and Everton on goal difference, with the top four spots occupied by the usual suspects Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool, but he was not far wrong. Rovers currently reside in 11th position in the overall table, but a quick glance at the home league standings shows us two things:

- If Liverpool could match their away form to that of at Anfield they would not be battling to get the fourth Champions League spot.

- Blackburn’s away form must be fairly shocking as they are nowhere near challenging for Europe, let alone the top four.

Liverpool’s season has been covered in great detail elsewhere, but Allardyce’s positive spin on things has been rather less scrutinised. In fact, Blackburn would be in 18th position if away form was all that mattered. Having picked up a paltry six points on their travels from Ewood Park, it would be the understatement of the century to say that much can be improved.

However, Saturday April 3rd 2010 offers a fabulous opportunity to pick up only a second away win of the season. Blackburn will take on Portsmouth at Fratton Park, and although the Hampshire side are showing a great deal of heart in their matches, even without the 9 point penalty for going into administration Portsmouth would be bottom of the league. In the reverse fixture, Blackburn completed a convincing 3-1 victory despite going behind in the 15th minute to a Jamie O’Hara goal.

Last night Portsmouth lost 5-0 at home to Chelsea. While Blackburn are not of the calibre of Carlo Ancelotti’s team, it is another low point for Pompey in a miserable season, and heads inevitably tend to drop – especially after such a drubbing. Blackburn beat notoriously difficult to break down Birmingham City 2-1, thanks to a brace from David Dunn, and this result coupled with a good value draw against Chelsea stands them in good stead for the visit to Pompey. With their last and only other away victory coming in November against the struggling Bolton Wanderers of Gary Megson (who has since been sacked), there will not be a better opportunity for Blackburn to overcome their away demons.

<a

Compare and buy Portsmouth tickets online.

2009-2010 has been rather a shocking season for Portsmouth Football Club, but fans fearing for the very existence of the club will have their worries alleviated somewhat with the news that the Premier League have reversed their initial decision to forbid Portsmouth selling players outside the transfer window. The club are as good as relegated now, for their 9 point deduction for going into administration has left them with just 13 points, and 14 adrift of safety.

A Premier League statement read:

1. Players may be sold to other Premier League clubs but may not play first-team football for the new club before the end of the season.
2. Players may be sold to a Football League or foreign club, subject to FIFA’s approval.
3. Portsmouth FC may enter into an agreement with another Premier League, Football League or foreign club that a player will be transferred to that other club in the summer.

Given that they will be looking to sell their prime assets before the season is out in order to stay afloat, Portsmouth may have to play a selection of youth team and reserve players in their remaining fixtures. With a remaining Premier League fixture list comprised of games against Chelsea, Tottenham, Blackburn, Wigan, Aston Villa, Bolton, Wolves and Everton, Pompey could yet have a large say in many of the battles across the table. Of course, this largely depends on what players they are able to field, but if the squad continues to show the heart that they have shown this season so far, Portsmouth Football Club should not be discounted from any games.

<a

Compare and buy Aston Villa tickets online.

This stage of the season is always a captivating watch. There is always a frantic last effort from each team to finish as well as they possibly can, but there are also additional factors that make the coming months such compelling viewing. Many footballers will be looking to play their way into selection for their national team in advance of the summer’s World Cup – and with that, fans will be praying that their country’s star player will avoid injury.

This Wednesday sees Aston Villa take on a rejuvenated Sunderland team, and both will have many points to prove. Villa are unbeaten in eight, but with five of those eight games being draws and four of those draws insipid 0-0 affairs, to label the team as in form is a tad misleading. Sunderland have had an unusual 09-10 to say the least. Having begun the season in encouraging fashion with a draw at Manchester United and victories over Liverpool and Arsenal, they looked at the very least certain to cement a mid-table position. After defeating Arsenal in November though, Sunderland went into a bizarre freefall and only achieved their next victory in March when they thrashed Bolton Wanderers 4-0. They now look safe from the relegation scrap though, with seven points between them and the bottom three, and will now be looking up the table again.

At this stage last season, fatigue caught up with Aston Villa dramatically. A rather odd statistic is that last Tuesday’s win over Wigan was their first victory in the month of March in Martin O’Neill’s entire reign at the club, and although squad depth is greater than last year, there is still a reliance on certain players – Milner, Agbonlahor and Ashley Young to name a few.

Following this match both teams have tough-looking away games; Aston Villa take on Chelsea and Sunderland go to Liverpool, which makes this game even more important. There are still a limited supply of tickets left for this tantalising clash, and Tixdaq.com has the cheapest available online!

<a

Compare and buy Fulham tickets online.

This season’s Premier League can be split into a series of battles between groups of teams with different goals. There are three teams within two points of each other hoping to win the title – Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal. There is the race to finish fourth in order to compete in next season’s lucrative Champions League, and this is between Liverpool, Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa. There are the teams that harbour goals of reaching the Europa League, such as Birmingham, Everton, Fulham and Stoke. Every other team seems to just be trying to survive, but the relegation scrap always makes for captivating viewing.

This Saturday sees two of the more ambitious teams clash; Roy Hodgson’s progressive Fulham side take on nouveau riche club Manchester City, and it looks set to be a classic. The West London side are in the middle of a hectic run which includes matches against Manchester United, Manchester City, Tottenham and Juventus (twice) all in the space of 25 days, and with a tepid draw against Spurs followed by two convincing losses to Manchester United and Juventus, their form looks to be stuttering.

Manchester City have been as inconsistent as anyone this season, and though their last visit to West London resulted in a barnstorming 4-2 success at Chelsea, who are notoriously strong at home, they followed it up with a rather insipid draw at Sunderland, where only the introduction of Adam Johnson brought impetus to the side. There were many damning statistics after the Sunderland match, but one that stands out is Shaun Wright-Phillips’ 47% pass completion – shocking for an England international. They still ought to be the favourites to claim the fourth Champions League place, with games in hand on all their rivals, but with Mancini seemingly unsure of his best side and prone to first half substitutions, this game looks far too difficult to call.

There are still tickets left for this mouthwatering clash, and we have the cheapest available to compare and buy from official sellers!

<a

Like the Special One’s Chelsea side, the Nerazzurri seem to have a habit of doing just enough to win each match. However, recently Inter have struggled to find that cutting edge in their play, and have drawn four of their last five matches. Three of those four draws have been 0-0 as opponents have managed to shut Inter out.

Although AC Milan lost to Inter on January 24th, since then they have picked up 13 points to Inter’s 10 and have closed the gap at the top of the table to just four points. Both sides have the distraction of Champions League football to worry about, but with AC Milan conceding three goals to Manchester United they are certainly not favourites to progress. Inter have a tough task at Chelsea, but at least Mourinho has a slender 2-1 lead to defend at his old stomping ground of Stamford Bridge. “Mourinho does not lose at Stamford Bridge” said the Inter boss, referring to his tenure in charge of Chelsea when he never lost a home game.

At this stage of the season, much comes down to a team’s mentality in the face of adversity. If, as expected, AC Milan are knocked out of the Champions League, their only focus would be the league – having been eliminated from the Italian Cup at the quarter final stage. It is a fascinating battle and at present it is impossible to tell whether Milan’s red or blue half will be celebrating come the end of the season, or indeed if Roma, seven points behind could make a breathtaking comeback.

Other battles underway include Juventus’ challenge for the elusive fourth Champions League spot – they are two points behind current occupants Palermo, and Fiorentina’s desperate struggle to get into any European slot after doing so well last year. The Viola are still in the Champions League, but it looks like winning the competition will be their only chance of gaining a place in next year’s tournament.

There are some huge matches in Serie A coming up this month, and tickets to the following are all available to compare and buy on Tixdaq.com:

<a

Compare and buy Manchester United tickets online.

When the fixture list was announced it was clear that Manchester United vs. Chelsea on April 3rd 2010 was a huge tie. However, it is now apparent that it would be no hyperbole to label this match the biggest Premier League game so far; the Barclays Premier League title is at stake.

The top two teams in the league face each other in less than a month, with the victor to surely become favourites for the domestic crown. It has been a topsy-turvy season with only one constant: its unpredictability. Many tipped Liverpool for the title but they are firmly locked in a battle for fourth, with Manchester City, Tottenham and Aston Villa all with points advantage or games in hand.

Many thought Arsenal would fall away as in previous years, particularly after Aaron Ramsey’s broken leg echoed memories of Eduardo’s similar injury in 2008. That year, the Gunners crumbled quite dramatically, but in the last month they have clawed back Chelsea’s nine point advantage to level with them, and are just two points behind Manchester United. A draw between the Red Devils and Chelsea could lead to Arsenal sneaking to the title as they have on paper the easiest remaining fixtures.

With so many matches in this Premier League season going against form, it is impossible to predict the final outcome, and that is why it is the most captivating in recent memory.

Manchester United vs. Chelsea tickets are still available to buy through Tixdaq.com beginning at the astonishingly good value price of just £20.

<a
