Wasim Akram backs Shahid Afridi for long-term captaincy

Pakistan legend Wasim Akram has said that he believes Shahid Afridi should be made captain of the national team on a long-term basis.

“I think Afridi should be made captain for the long term so that he gains more confidence, because he is developing into a good captain,” Akram told The Hindu.

Akram also backed Afridi’s call for a batting coach.

“I agree the team needs a batting coach. Every team now has a full—time specialist batting coach with them and I have always believed that even at this level, the best players sometimes need to be given guidance and tips on batting issues.”

Sri Lanka all-rounder to miss World Cup final

Angelo Matthews has suffered an injury which will rule him out Saturday’s Cricket World Cup final.

The Sri Lanka all-rounder has a thigh injury, and will most likely be replaced by off-spinner Suraj Randiv.

Meanwhile, India seamer Ashish Nehra is a major doubt for the final, after injuring a finger on his right hand during his team’s semi-final win over Pakistan.

Sri Lanka Spinner Muttiah Muralitharan is expected to play through his injury, in what will be his last game for his country.

India to face Sri Lanka in Cricket World Cup final

India will take on Sri Lanka in Saturday’s Cricket World Cup final after seeing of Pakistan in Mohali.

Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar got India off to a great start as they batted first, with Tendulkar coming close to acheieving his 100th international century. Pakistan were eventually set a target of 260.

However, the total proved much for Pakistan. Mohammad Hafeez struck 43 and Misbah-ul-Haq made a defiant 56 but Pakistan were all out for 231 in the final over.

Ignore the hype, says India captain

India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has told his team to forget the hype surrounding their Cricket World Cup semi-final against Pakistan tomorrow, and just focus on the game itself.

Dhoni realises the significance of this match, which is not only one of the great sporting events but also has massive political significance.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has invited his Pakistani counterpart Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani to watch the game with him, which will be the first meeting between the leaders since April 2010 in Bhutan.

Three teams through to Cricket World Cup quarter-finals

As it stands, three teams are definitely through to the quarter-finals of the Cricket World Cup.

New Zealand, Sri Lanka and Australia have already made it out of Group A, and Pakistan will join them if they beat Zimbabwe this afternoon.

Group B has been much more unpredictable with no team securing a quarter-final place yet. Bangladesh are the team causing problems, as India and South Africa will go through as soon as Bangladesh lose a match. A lot hangs in the balance of England’s next match against the West Indies. If the West Indies win, Bangladesh could go through after their win today against the Netherlands. If England win the game, Bangladesh will have to beat South Africa as well to stand a chance.

Tickets to see England take on Pakistan in the fifth and final One Day International match are still available to buy online.

We can confirm that England vs Pakistan tickets are still on sale for the match which is set to take place at The Rose Bowl in Southampton this Wednesday (September 22nd).

Adult ticket prices for the ODI match between Pakistan and England start at less than £40 – £15 less than face value.

There are still over 2,500 England v Pakistan tickets still available for all upcoming fixtures. The England cricket team will take on Pakistan over a series of test matches and one day internationals throughout August and September, with the first day of the third test match set to get under-way next week at The Oval in London.

The fourth and final test will take place at Lord’s at the end of the month, before September’s one day international fixtures.

England v Pakistan tickets are available for one day fixtures at Durham County Cricket Club on September 10th, Headingly Cricket Ground on September 12th, The Oval on September 17th and Lord’s on September 20th.

England see no reason to change a winning side against Pakistan

Having won the first Test match against Pakistan by 354 runs, England have elected to keep the same 12 players for the second Test from August 6th – 10th 2010. Yorkshire’s all-rounder Tim Bresnan will again play a backup role should he be required after Ajmal Shahzad failed to recover from the ankle problem that kept him out of the first match.

Pakistan meanwhile have sought out a new approach after their convincing defeat. Ex-captain Mohammad Yousuf has been brought back into the fold after suspension, while Danish Kaneria has been dropped after a fairly disastrous taking of 1-171 from 33 overs.

England looking good but lucky in Test match against Pakistan

England have just begun their first of four Test matches against Pakistan, and it all seems to be going rather well for the current ICC World Twenty20 champions. Eoin Morgan scored his maiden Test century, while his partner Paul Collingwood is currently on 81 not out.

Still, England are a tad fortunate to be in such a position. Pakistan wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal has had a nightmare session, dropping catches and missing stumpings that England ought not to have got away with.

England now are favourites to claim victory in the first Test, and before play started this morning were on a score of 331-4. However, given that India and Sri Lanka made 707 and 642 respectively in their recent match, they will have to continue where they left off yesterday if they are to emerge victorious.

ICC World Twenty20 champions England will play Pakistan this summer in both a Test Series and One Day Internationals, and by comparing event prices and days, the more erudite consumer can themselves a better deal.

England v Pakistan tickets are also on sale at surprisingly prices on the secondary market. Day 5 of the 3rd nPower Test at the Oval in London will set consumers back £40 from dependable seller Seatwave, and they will come with a great view in line with the wicket from the 10th row of stand 11.

In addition, tickets for the 2nd ODI, England v Pakistan at Headingley Cricket Ground on September 12th 2010 can be bought from the excellent price of £61.

Interest in England Cricket is on a massive upsurge at present – with their success at the ICC World Twenty20 in the West Indies no doubt a direct contribution.

Of course, English champions of the world has a nice ring to it. It almost goes without saying that England Cricket tickets are currently most prized commodities indeed, but there are still bargains available if you look in the right places.

The secondary market of the UK ticket industry has a stigma attached to it, but there is a good reason that it is still thrives – and is keeping thousands of fans happy. The rather dogmatic view of seedy touts waiting outside venues is rapidly becoming an outdated one, for there are now plenty of secure sources for re-sales – sometimes at less than the original price.

England have just began a two Test series against Bangladesh. The more intrepid consumer can save a lot of money by choosing the vendor and day they attend carefully.

England v Bangladesh, 1st Test, Day 5 at Lord’s on Monday 31st May, is clearly the most expensive beginning at £80, but tickets for England v Bangladesh, 1st Test, Day 3 on Saturday 29th May can be obtained from just £35.

Because primary sites are retailing their allocation for the same match for £40, it shows there is excellent value to be found in the secondary market.

There are similar bargains to be found in the Second Test. England v Bangladesh, 2nd Test, Day 2 Tickets at Lancashire County Cricket Club on Saturday 5th June can be picked up from just £18 each.

Those looking for tickets to see England’s traditional rivals Australia will of course have to pay slightly more, but the One Day International Series will no doubt be a thrilling occasion, with aggressive cricket akin to that in the Twenty20 game.

The latest generation of England cricketers features big hitters with the bat such as Kevin Pietersen, Michael Lumb and Craig Kieswetter, who take the initiative to the opposition rather than play cautiously. Stuart Broad, Graeme Swann and Michael Yardy terrify batsmen on the crease everywhere with their bowling.

It almost seems odd to say it, but England may be the most entertaining team in cricket at present.

England into ICC World Twenty20 semi-finals

It feels odd to write that England have comfortably progressed to the last four of an international tournament, but there is no danger of libel action here: at the ICC World Twenty20, England’s team have been in excellent form.

Although the outcome of both England’s group matches were preposterously determined by the weather – sending the woefully unlucky Ireland home – in the Super Eights stage they have been excellent. England defeated South Africa, Pakistan and finally New Zealand to top their Super Eights group and qualify in top spot for the semi-finals.

They are likely to face Sri Lanka or the West Indies in the last four, with Australia looming on the horizon for the final. The Aussies are the only team left in the competition with a 100% record, and the old rivalry could yet be resumed.

Before that though, there is the small matter of a semi-final to contend!

Ash cloud looks unlikely to upset England’s World Twenty20 plans

The England Twenty20 cricket team are due to travel to the Caribbean this Sunday ahead of two scheduled warm up matches before the Twenty20 World Cup. Paul Collingwood’s team are set to go up against Bangladesh and South Africa in Barbados on 28 and 29 April and there had been fears the team would not make it, due to the ongoing disruption of the volcanic ash cloud that has grounded planes across the UK and Europe.

England officials have moved to assure fans that the team will indeed be able to travel, and begin their preparations as scheduled ahead of their first World Cup fixture against the West Indies on May 3rd.

Coming on the day that the ECB announced a 23% year on year rise in attendances at domestic cricket matches, its seems the growing popularity and record attendances of 1.5million in 2008 are becoming reflected in resale ticket prices for this summer’s Twenty20 World Cup.

While many Twenty20 Cricket World Cup tickets for the early round and semi finals remain available at a modest increase on face value prices a Final Day Gold Ticket with a face value of £90 is currently being offered at a price of £750, a massive 833% mark up.

While the ECB hope to dissuade supporters and brokers alike from engaging in the resale of Twenty20 Cricket World Cup tickets, it remains to be seen whether this will be effective or simply limit the supply of Tweny20 Cricket World Cup tickets further, resulting in increased demand and ever increasing Twenty20 Ticket resale prices.
