PSV Eindhoven look to maintain position with win against struggling Feyenoord

Eredivisie leaders PSV will be licking their lips at the prospect of facing lowly Feyenoord at De Kuip in Rotterdam on the 24th of April 2011.

In the reverse fixture earlier in the season, PSV hammered Feyenoord 10-0 at home, with Brazilian Jonathan Reis bagging a hat trick.

The Rotterdam side are having a season to forget. They finished fourth in the league last year but are currently fifteenth and struggling to pick up points.

Feyenoord and PSV are regarded as two of the ‘big three’ clubs in Holland, along with Ajax. But Feyenoord are in desperate need of points just to stay in the top flight. Victory against PSV may just be the medicine needed to cure this disaster of a season.

PSV suffer shock defeat ahead of visit to Ajax

PSV suffered a shock defeat at the hands of NAC Breda this past Saturday, leaving the Eredivisie title race wide open. The Eindhoven side threw away a one-goal lead to lose the game 2-1, as well as losing their position at the top of the table. FC Twente’s 1-0 victory away at RKC Waalwijk means that they now occupy the top spot, and with Ajax winning convincingly against Sparta Rotterdam, there are only a few points separating the teams at the summit.

Arsenal preside over Olympiacos’ fortunes

Arsenal may already be assured of qualification for the next stage of the UEFA Champions League but they still have a significant role to play in determining the fates of the other teams in Group H.

Arsenal play second place Olympiacos at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday with the Greek side knowing that point will see them join the Gunners in the next round. However, a defeat will open the door to Standard Liege who could leapfrog them via their head-to-head record if they win at home against AZ Alkmaar.

The Dutch side lie bottom of the group but could snatch a UEFA Europa League spot from their opponents with a win but having sacked manager Ronald Koeman at the weekend following a painful 2-1 home defeat to Vitesse Arnhem in the Eredivisie they are in state of flux.

Arsenal have had a shaky time of it themselves lately which has not been helped by a spate of injuries but they usually win at home on these European nights so the ball would appear to be in Standard Liege’s court.
