There is currently a May 1st deadline for organisers to decide if a race will be possible, but Ecclestone has been quoted by the BBC as saying: “We need to wait a little bit.”

A spokesman for governing body the FIA stated: “As far as we’re concerned a decision is still due on Sunday.”

The Bahrain GP was scheduled to take place on March 13th but was called off due to civil unrest.

The race has come under threat after Ecclestone pushed the cost of sanctioning the race to nearly £26million, doubling the current cost.

It seemed at though Turkish officials would be unwilling to meet such a demand, with Istanbul mayor Kadir Topbas quoted by the Zaman newspaper as saying: “It was not a profitable event. Serious finances are needed in order for this system to work. Unfortunately there was a problem. Turkish people didn’t give the races recognition.”

However, Ecclestone still believes a deal can be made.

“The race brings a huge amount of people, trade and publicity to the city,” Ecclestone told the Daily Express

“I am a bit disappointed and I hope we can work out a deal.”

The 2011 Turkish Grand Prix is the next on the calendar and will take place on Sunday, May 8.

The Spanish star is hoping for a third drivers’ championship this year but currently sits in third place after three races. He is 42 points behind leader Sebastian Vettel.

Alonso said in his blog on the official Ferrari website: “It was definitely not the start to the season we were hoping for, for us and all our fans.

The Renault driver had spent 10 weeks at the Santa Corona Hospital in Italy following a rally accident.

Despite partially severing a hand and having multiple arm and leg fractures, the hospital released a statement to say Kubica’s condition is “good”.

It is now expected that Kubica will return home to Monaco to rest before starting a rehabilitation programme.

Rumours have suggested the Ferrari supremo may leave the company to pursue a new career. When interviewed by La Gazzetta dello Sport, di Montezemolo said: “Me in politics? Yes, with Alonso as prime minister.

“I would have him because he has the strongest character and is optimistic but also a realist.”

Montezemolo then went on to name an entire cabinet of worthy drivers.

“Vettel, who is smart and fast, Rosberg for being able to hold off Schumacher, Perez for his talent and Hamilton, a great champion,” he said.

The biggest news however was the absence of Felipe Massa from the dream cabinet. Massa’s contract with Ferrari runs out at the end of the season.

The 26-year-old Russian, who recorded a podium finish in Melbourne three weeks ago, told The Independent: “there are a lot of lies written about me.”

After just two races, Ferrari are already 36 points behind Red Bull in the constructors’ standings.

“I am definitely not satisfied with the way the season has begun, but I have complete faith in the people here, who know how to react when the situation is tough,” Montezemolo told Ferrari’s official website.

“If I’d not found myself ninth I’d have been able to fight to the end for the lower steps of the podium,” he said.

Red Bull driver Sebastian Vettel won the Australian Grand Prix with ease, but the McLaren team did much better than expected.

Button told BBC Sport: “Clearly, the Red Bulls are quick. But we’re a lot closer on race pace than this time last year. I think Ferrari will be very strong too. It’s looking like a continuation of the battle we saw last year.”

Although Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel won Sunday’s Australian Grand Prix by 22 seconds, Button believes McLaren are in a very strong position, whether the statistics support him or not.

Winter testing suggested the best McLaren could hope for would be to contend in the midfield, however, the Woking outfit finished in second and sixth places at Albert Park on Sunday.

“Robert followed the race like a child follows his favourite Disney cartoon,” manager Daniele Morelli, who watched the race with Kubica along with the Pole’s girlfriend Edyta, told La Stampa newspaper.

“He wanted to congratulate Petrov for a superb performance in both qualifying and the race,” said Morelli.

Team principal Christian Horner explained that the longer straights at Sepang will favour those with KERS.

“We plan to have it on the car for Malaysia,” Horner told Autosport.

“The KERS effect here [in Australia] is less, as the run to the first corner is shorter. So that is our main exposure, which is why we didn’t want you guys to tell the rest of the world that we didn’t have it.

“In Malaysia there is a relatively long run to the first turn, and we will be keen to get it on the car as soon as possible.”

Barrichello, who was trying to fight his way through the field after running wide early on, was unable to use the rear wing to aid overtaking on the pit straight, according to team manager Dickie Stanford.

“Something in the race control system was wrong,” Stanford told Auto Motor und Sport. “Barrichello couldn’t use his rear wing on the home straight even though a few times he was close enough to the car in front. It was (mistakenly) programmed for the second sector.”

Webber said his post-race debrief lasted a lot longer than normal following his fifth place finish, but engineers are still looking for answers as to why he struggled.

“We found a few pointers in the data but we’ll need to strip the car down before drawing any conclusions,” Webber said in his column in the Daily Telegraph. “Only then will we know whether something was broken, or whether there was something fundamentally wrong with the car.

Button claimed that Massa forced him to leave the track, but officials disagreed and Button received a drive through penalty.

“It was a good fight, no?” Massa told Eurosport. “I was holding my position and he was not able to pass me.

“He tried many times and I was able to stay there many times. Then, when he passed me, he passed me in a not allowed situation. He had to give me back the position or they penalised him, which was the case.”

Pirelli’s tyres had been predicted to wear out severely, with some saying four pit stops may be needed. However, this was not the case. Sauber driver Sergio Perez even made it through with just one stop.

The new McLaren had serious issues during testing, but with Hamilton finishing second, and Button unlucky to only finish sixth, it would seem that the two British drivers will be able to fight for the Championship after all.

Hamilton had a fairly straight forward race to finish second. Button, however, had a poor start and a drive through penalty to contend with. Nevertheless, McLaren will be delighted with the results, although there is clearly a long way to go to catch Sebastian Vettel’s Red Bull.

Speaking tp the BBC, Ecclestone said “I thought maybe at the beginning it was a little crazy but it’s surprising how much support that idea is getting now. Providing we do it so nobody would know when it was going to happen, like when it rains, I think it would make for a lot of entertainment. Whether or not it would make it more exciting, I don’t know. Until you have done these things it’s impossible to say but I thought last year was a super season.”

The state of emergency will overlap a May deadline which would mean that the race is definitely off. But F1′s governing body insists the developments have not immediately changed the situation as far as the FIA is concerned.

“There were many people involved in making that (deadline) decision and for now the (World Motor Sport) Council will respect the deadline,” an FIA spokesmen said.

“There is an obligation to that.

“But clearly the situation is fluid,” the spokesman added. “We’re adapting to information day by day, because of what is now happening we will react when it is the right moment.”

“This one is the first Toro Rosso fully developed by the team without relying on Red Bull, because with last year’s car there were things in common with the previous one,” 20-year-old Alguersuari told El Mundo newspaper.

“The truth is that it is going well, I think better than last year, but we still don’t know the true potential. It seems fast, but we don’t know exactly where we are until Australia.”

The new Mercedes in it’s basic form performed poorly, being almost a second of the early testing pace. But the first update worked wonders, allowing the car to set the fastest times of the week. Brawn, however, is still not certain if the team had completely closed the gap.

“Whether we have done enough or not is difficult to say,” Brawn told Frankfurter Allgemeine. “It was hard to keep calm, and I was constantly reminding the team to stick to the plan. In situations like that, it’s tempting to react and waste resources.”

McLaren have struggled for pace and reliability in testing and will hope that that fortunes change in race conditions when tactics will play a larger role.

Hamilton told etyres.co.uk: “In the first few races, you can imagine that everyone is going to be confused with the pit-stops. Eventually, it will settle down and everyone will get used to it – maybe three pit-stops will be common – but, for now, we don’t really know. Vettel’s contract was due to finish this year but he has now signed for a further three years according to Red Bull advisor, Helmut Marko.

Marko told Autosport that it “was in mutual agreement that we extended Sebastian’s contract to 2014. Both sides wanted to continue the partnership, so it was no big issue.”

Red Bull reportedly offered the German a deal worth in excess of 12 million Euros per year.

Winter testing revealed that the new Mercedes was way off the pace, but an updated version that has been tested in Barcelona showed encouraging signs.

The update, including a diffuser, new exhaust, wings and bodywork, allowed Rosberg’s team-mate Michael Schumacher  to top testing times for the end of the week.

Rosberg told Autosport: “The team has made a lot of progress, so it has been great to see how much progress has come on.

“Of course we are not there yet, as we want to win the world championship and we are not the fastest car yet, but things are going in the right direction so that is really nice to see.”

One of three new teams last year, Lotus initially looked good, but failed to really trouble the established teams in 2010.

Lotus were four seconds behind Red Bull in 2010,” Williams driver and grand prix veteran Barrichello told O Estado de S.Paulo newspaper.

At testing in Barcelona Massa completed 132 laps, the equivalent of a double race, and said Ferrari’s latest upgrade was a clear improvement.

Webber was third for world champions Red Bull, 0.374 off the pace.

Webber told reporters: “I think Ferrari are strong. I think we’re going OK and the rest is hard to say.”

Asked about Webber’s comments, Massa responded: “First of all they are a team that won last year and second they are very quick here.” Massa added ” I hope Mark Webber is right (that Ferrari are strong).”

Dennis, 63, has been found guilty of a string of traffic offences, the latest being driving through a red light. Dennis claims it was to avoid a collision

Dennis told the Surrey Advertiser: “There were only two other cars around but I felt that it would be more prudent to continue rather than stop.”

Dennis stood down as McLaren team principal in 2009 to take on an executive chairman role with his focus on the company’s new McLaren MP4-12C supercar.

Trulli told ESPN: “At the moment we have many things that are not right and that give rise for concern,” Trulli said. “We have a lot of problems for the first race and in this respect the cancellation of Bahrain is for us very welcome.”

Trulli’s Lotus managed only six laps on Thursday morning due to a gearbix problem, which was his final practice in the car before the season begins in Melbourne. However, team-mate Heikki Kovalainen did manage 40 laps.

Ceccarelli told jounalists in a Barcelona press conference: “Robert is getting better every day. I see that he’s recovering physiologically very quickly.

“This isn’t a surprise for us as we know Robert very well. It’s a big surprise though for the doctor at the hospital. It’s good news as they are satisfied how he’s reacting to the surgery.”

Following Jenson Button’s downbeat comments earlier in the week, the McLaren MP4-26 appears to be struggling to keep up with Red Bull and Ferrari cars. The new car has had a number of problems, including at this week’s final pre-season testing in Barcelona.

Button was 0.366 seconds slower than Red Bull rival Mark Webber’s best time in testing at Barcelona, and then suffered exhaust problems. Hamilton was fourth, but spent large amounts of time in the garage with various reliability issues.

The Ferrari doesn’t cope quite as well as the McLaren in the rain, but given that the last time it rained on May 9th in Barcelona was in 2002, Massa and Alonso ought to be safe from the elements.

After a disappointing season last year, Ferrari look to bounce back with the signing of Fernando Alonso to replace Finn Kimi Räikkönen, who has departed to take part in the World Rally Championship. The fact that central defender Jody Craddock is the club’s top scorer has to be a concern and a mid-term injury to Andy Keogh will further hinder their potency in front of goal.

Tottenham should motor to all three points assuming that they use their quick passing and pacy wingers to their full advantage but if there are any niggling doubts in the backs of the players’ minds, the visitors may feel they can escape north London with a point.

The news that Silverstone has signed a deal to continue to be the venue for the British Grand Prix has sparked excitement amongst motorsport fans.

The Northamptonshire circuit had been ditched by Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone in favour of Donnington Park but the after the latter experienced financial difficulties, Silverstone was finally awarded a 17 year contract to host the event after intense negotiations.

Since tickets went on sale over 6,500 were snapped up in just 24 hours with the £1.2m in revenue already justifying the decision to host the race at a circuit that has become the home of British motor racing.

Brawn, who helped Schumacher win five straight driving titles as technical director at Ferrari, was hired to run the team 16 months ago. Before his 10 years with Ferrari, Brawn oversaw Schumacher’s back-to-back titles in the same role at the Benetton team in 1994 and 1995.

Ross Brawn’s intervention now means 10 teams will start this season which is due to open at the Australian Grand Prix (march 29). The sale comes at a time when Formula One costs are coming under closer scrutiny by automakers experiencing the worst global sales slump in decades.
