Lenny Henry picks up theatre prize

Whilst he may be a regular household name to most tv viewers in the UK, Lenny Henry is far from a familiar face amongst theatregoers. However, at last night’s Evening Standard Theatre Awards (November 22), Lenny Henry was awarded the Best Newcomer gong.

Lenny Henry has received high praise from a number of theatre critics and theatregoers and this award has reinforced the quality of his performance. Reviews of the play have applauded the way Henry has demonstrated a complete understanding of the role of Othello, one of Shakespeare’s most challenging characters, and has brought his own degree gravitas and authenticity. The casting as a whole is inspired; Jessica Harris plays his fragile wife with delicacy and vulnerability ad Conrad Nelson portrays a suitable villain in the guise of Othello’s back-stabbing lieutenant, Iago. Rutter’s casting has paid off; the run continues to sell out at the Trafalgar, and Henry seems set for a new career as an actor of serious dramatic ability.

“Dudley Moor” banishes his Shakespearian ghosts

In February 2009, Lenny Henry took to the stage as the lead in Shakepeare’s tragedy Othello, playing the troubled Moorish general in a role which has captivated audiences around the country. In September the play came to London’s Trafalgar Studios and the plaudits of the critics and public alike have continued to roll in.

News of Barrie Rutter’s adaptation drew sharp intakes of breath when Henry was announced as the player to take the role of Othello himself. Some viewed it as a cynical piece of marketing, a two-worlds-colliding attempt to shock and tittilate audiences used to seeing Henry lampooning around on television. But the casting was inspired by two factors: one, Henry developed a late fascination for Shakespeare whilst completing his Open University degree in English literature at the tender age of 48, and two, get under the skin of Othello the character and you might recognise a little of Henry in there, too.

Othello the general is a north African Moor, a brooding soldier quite out of place in the geteel European society populated by his Venetian wife Desdemona and her Senator father, Brabantio. Combine jealousy and treachery from Othello’s supposed nearest and dearest, and you can see how this play is often regarded as the pinnacle of Shakespeare’s tragic dramas, building in the themes of racism, betrayal, envy and love. The casting of Lenny Henry has imitated art in at least one of these respects; typecast as a slightly buffoonish comedy character, he has found it difficult to gain acceptance as an actor of any serious intent. His tough upbringing in the West Midlands in the 1970s brought racism to his front door, but drawing on these difficulties has resulted in one of the most astonishing stage debuts in recent years.

Lenny Henry brings Othello to West End stage

Lenny Henry is due to take to the West End stage for this first time playing the title role in Shakespeare’s Othello.

The Comedian who made his stage acting debut in February in Othello at Leeds’ West Yorkshire Playhouse, will make his West End debut when the production transfers to Trafalgar Studios 1, where it will have a limited season from September 18 to December 12.

Lenny Henry rose to fame as a cult comedian, making his TV debut in 1975 on the New Faces talent show. He has been a regular television face ever since, appearing in shows including the BBC’s Three of a Kind, Chef!, The Lenny Henry Show, Hope and Gloryand Lenny Henry in Pieces.

Lenny Henry is joined in the cast by Conrad Nelson (as Iago) and Jessica Harris (Desdemona), as well as David Beckford (Duke/Gratiano), Matt Connor (Roderigo), Andy Cryer (Montano), Victoria Gee (Bianca), Geoff Leesley (Brabantio), Chris Pearse (Herald), Simon Holland Roberts (Senator/Lodovico), Sara Poyzer (Emilia) and Richard Standing (Cassio).

West End Theatre fans will welcome the news as they gear up for a summer season which will see long running favorites such as Hairspray, Chicago, Dirty Dancing, Les Miserable, Oliver and Jersey Boys coupled with exciting new productions of Calender Girls, Sister Act, A Street Car Named Desire, Life is a Dream and Red.

David Tennants’ Hamlet named theatre event of the year

The Whatsonstage.com Theatregoers’ Choice Awards have been announced, seeing David Tennant’s leading role in Hamlet voted event of the year. The Awards also saw Kenneth Branagh win best actor for Ivanov, Eddie Izzard named best solo performer, Katy Stephens win best actress for her role in The Histories and Josh Hartnett rewarded for his performances in Rain Man with London newcomer of the year.

A back had injury forced Tennant to pull out of the opening night of Hamlet and limited him to only a handful of appearances at London’s Novello Theatre before the run ended. Nevertheless, critics heaped praise on his performance justifying its best event tag and alos best regional production following its early sting in Strafford-Upon-Avon.

Following this hugely popular Hamlet production which ended earlier this year, theatregoers who missed out will be keen to get to get hold of tickets. Fear not the latest production of Hamlet staring Hollywood star Jude Law is set to start on June 3 at the Wyndham’s Theatre. Previews begin on May 29 and hundreds of Hamlet tickets are currently available from £60.
