Rough Beats Cancelled: Another UK Festival Hit By Financial Difficulties

Following in the wake of Oxegen, Big Chill and Sonisphere; Yorkshire event, Rough Beats has been forced to cancel it’s plans this year, just one month ahead of the opening night. As well as these annual large events, there have been a number of smaller more niche festivals that have also had to close their tent flaps this summer, citing the overwhelming powerhouse that is the London Olympics as their biggest threat. The next biggest reason (as it always seems to be nowadays) is the current financial climate, a situation that we are all but too familiar with by now.

Organisers stated that there is currently a ‘difficult environment for festivals’ in Britain, and that ‘financial pressures’ where to blame for the downfall.

Acts due to play included; Azealia Banks, Django Django, Gruff Rhys and Pulled Apart By Horses.

Let’s hope that 2013 sees a Festival revival next summer!

Production seats released for Coldplay O2 Arena show

Extra seats are now available for the upcoming Coldplay show at London O2 Arena. The UK band will perform at the venue on Friday 9th December, and have now made a number of seats to the rear of the stage available due to high demand.

Coldplay entered the UK album chart at number one last week, with their latest record Mylo Xyloto. The success means that all five of Coldplay’s albums – including previous efforts Parachutes, A Rush Of Blood To The Head, X&Y and Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends – have reached number one in the UK charts.

Previous to its release, the band announced a short arena tour, and are set to perform three shows in December. The band will take to the stage at Glasgow SECC on Saturday 3rd December and Manchester MEN Arena on Sunday 4th, before their final show of the year at the O2 Arena.

The group delighted thousands of fans this summer, with headline performances at Glastonbury, T In The Park and Oxegen festivals, playing new material as well as a number of greatest hits, including songs such as Yellow, The Scientist and Fix You.

Another triumphant year for Oxegen Festival

It was once again another triumphant weekend at this year’s Oxegen Festival in Punchestown Ireland.

This year’s headliners were The Black Eyed Peas, The Foo Fighters and Coldplay. It seems that all the headliners this year delivered suitable sets of gigantic performances to the delight of the Irish crowd. The Festival itself was ended in true Irish fashion with a great Oxegen moment, as Christy Moore came on stage with Coldplay to perform Ride On which evoked a mammoth singalong from the masses.

The acts on display this year represented a much more equal balance between pop and rock, featuring the likes of Ke$ha, The Black Eyed Peas and Beyonce mixed with the usual suspects of The Strokes, The Arctic Monkeys and The Foo Fighters. The balance however seemed to go down very well, catering for everyone’s musical tastes and providing great music all round.

The Strokes, who many argue are the band that single-handedly saved indie, performed a classic set on the Friday of Oxegen and are also down to headline this year’s Reading and Leeds Festivals.

Jay Z and Kanye West album release date revealed

The forthcoming collaboration between Kanye and Jay Z, Watch the Throne, release date seems to have been revealed today, albeit unofficially. Those who pre-ordered the record made by the two hip-hop superstars received a shipping date receipt as August 2nd.

Although no one has officially confirmed this date, it seems very likely that it will be when the album is released. The question remains as to whether or not the record will live up to the colossal expectations imposed upon it by the music industry and the almost expected genius people believe it will produce.

Kanye West held a listening party for the album last night in New York without Jay Z, who is playing Oxegen this weekend. At the listening party, Kanye announced the news that Frank Ocean appears on two of the tracks and Beyonce will appear on one.

It has also been confirmed by Jay Z that he is working on his next album after the collaboration with Kanye West. Jay Z did not perform with Beyonce at Glastonbury, but he is expected to wow fans at this weekend’s Oxegen Festival in Ireland.

Oxegen Stage times announced

This year’s Oxegen set times have been revealed online.

On the main stage tonight (Friday 8th July), Stereophonics are playing at 19:05, Jay Z at 20:50 and Arcade Fire are headlining at 23:00.

While over on the Vodafone Stage, Scouting for Girls are on at 19:45, Groove Armada 21:00 and Fatboy Slim at 23:00.

Empire of the Sun are playing at 20:10, Goldfrapp at 21:40 and David Guetta at 23:15 on the Heineken Green Spheres Stage.

Oxegen kicks off this Friday

Ireland’s biggest festival, Oxegen, kicks off this Friday for three days of world-class entertainment.

Friday night (July 8th) will see headliners Black Eyed Peas take to the main stage, supported by The Script and My Chemical Romance. The Strokes and Swedish House Mafia headline the Vodafone stage, with Leftfield and Calvin Harris topping the bill on the Heineken Green Spheres stage.

Saturday (June 8th) has headliners Foo Fighters supported by Arctic Monkeys and Beady Eye. Paolo Nutini and deadmau5 are top of the bill on the Vodafone stage while Brandon Flowers headlines the Heineken Green Spheres stage.

Closing the festival on Sunday night will be Coldplay, supported by Beyonce and Slash. On the vodafone stage, The National and Pendulum head the line-up, while Primal Scream and Chase & Status top the bill on the Heineken Green Spheres stage.

A host of other world-class bands, as well as an incredible, unique atmosphere have made the festival a favourite on the festival circuit.

Black Eyed Peas gear up for Alton Towers show

This Wednesday Black Eyed Peas will take to the stage for a headline set at Alton Towers.

The hip hop superstars will perform a full 90-minute set in the country’s biggest theme park. Fans will have the oppurtunity to spend the day riding some of the UK’s most exciting roller-coasters before seeing the band perform in front of the famous Towers themselves.

Black Eyed Peas recently completed a stadium tour and last weekend headlined Wireless Festival in Hyde Park. This coming weekend will see the band head to Ireland to headline Oxegen Festival.

Nirvana releases special edition of Nevermind to celebrate 20th anniversary.

Nirvana’s most successful album will be released as a new super deluxe edition.

The band originally released the album in 1991 and twenty years later it will be re-released with rare material, recordings, b-sides, radio performances and previously unreleased tracks. Along with the four CDs there will be a DVD of a concert performance again previously unreleased.

Kurt Cobain died in 1994 and the band disbanded. Nirvana’s drummer Dave Grohl went on to create Foo Fighters and released their debut album in 1995. Earlier this year the band released their seventh album ’Wasting Light’. The album saw Grohl reunited for the first time with Nirvana’s Krist Novoselic and producer Butch Vig, both of whom had last worked with Grohl twenty years earlier on Nirvanas ‘Nevermind’ album.

Grhol remembers Cobain fondly “I have wonderful memories of Kurt. Kurt was a great dude. he was a really sweet guy. And it’s heartbreaking still, what happened. ” and he says of the momentous album they made together “when we made that record, Nevermind, it really changed everyone’s lives – forever’.

Foo Fighters release ‘Wasting Light’ was released on the 12th of April. Foo Fighters play iTunes, T in the Park and Oxegen festival this summer.

Jessie J is will support Katy Perry on the American leg of her ‘california Dreams World tour’ before returning to the UK for her own 12 date tour. Jessie’s tour starts in Birmingham on the 17th and finishes in the Brighton on November the 3rd. Jessie has a busy summer of festivals ahead of her too playing Glastonbury, Oxegen, Love Box and itunes to name a few.

Arctic Monkeys announce UK arena tour

Following the release of their new album, Suck It And See, Arctic Monkeys have confirmed details of a UK arena tour, set to take place in October and November 2011.

The band unveiled their fourth studio album earlier this month, and are set to perform two homecoming shows at Don Valley Bowl in Sheffield this weekend. The group are also confirmed to perform at a number of festivals this summer, including V Festival and Oxegen, and have now extended their busy schedule with the announcement of the 9-date arena jaunt later in the year.

The tour will begin at the Capital FM Arena in Nottingham on Friday 28th October, and will stop off at major venues across the UK until coming to a close at the Liverpool Echo Arena on Wednesday 9th November.

Blink-182 postpone tour dates until 2012

Blink-182 have been forced to postpone all of their 2011 dates until 2012.

In a statement, the group said they were pushing back the jaunt because work on their new album had not been completed.

“It is with heavy hearts that we have to announce our planned 2011 European Summer tour has been rescheduled. When we booked the tour last year, we were confident that we would have the new album out before the Summer. Turns out we were mistaken as the album is taking longer than we thought and won’t be out till later this year.”

They added that they didn’t want to tour again until the album had been released.

The band were also due to appear at T in the park and Oxegen Festival, but have pulled out of both. They have however added three new dates in Dublin, Belfast and Glasgow to replace the gigs that their Scottish and Irish fans have lost.

Original tickets will be valid for the rescheduled dates.

Oxegen adds Slash and Manics to the bill

Slash, Manic Street Preachers and Glasvegas are amongst the latest acts announced for Oxegen 2011.

The Punchestown racecourse event is held in the middle of July and also includes Arctic Monkeys, Coldplay and Black Eyed Peas this year.

Oxegen has also announced OFWGKTA, Metronomy, The Saturdays,Peter Doherty, The Pretty Reckless, Professor Green, Ke$ha, Eliza Doolittle, Example, and Cherri Bomb.

Festival Director John Probyn said, “We think today’s announcement offers something really special for all our fans. Whatever your taste in music, be it pop, rock, hip-hop or RnB, Oxegen delivers. It’s that eclecticism and quality that make it such a vibrant and exciting festival. Personally, I’m really looking forward to seeing Slash play – the man is genuine rock royalty!”

Slash recently announced that he will be playing a gig in his hometown of Stoke-on-Trent later this year.

Coldplay to co-finance new Ray Winstone film

Rock band Coldplay are to co-finance a film starring Ray Winstone.

Directed by their friend from University Mat Whitecross, ‘Ashes‘ is set to star Sexy Beast lead Winstone in what has been described as a ‘noir thriller’. Whitecross has directed many of Coldplay’s videos as well as Ian Dury biopic Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll.

Paul Viragh, who wrote the Ian Dury biopic, will also serve as scriptwriter for ‘Ashes’. Chris Martin and fellow bandmates Guy Berryman, Jonny Buckland and Will Champion will all act as executive producers for the project. No release date has been confirmed yet.

Coldplay will headline several festivals this summer, including Glastonbury, Oxegen and T in the Park. They are also currently working on their fifth album with Brian Eno, expected in the Autumn.

Coldplay Hyde Park Show set to be confirmed?

Rumours are currently circulating regarding a possible Coldplay show at Hyde Park this year. The band are already confirmed to perform at a number of festivals this year, and now an outdoor summer show in London could be on the cards.

The band will perform headline shows at Glastonbury, T In The Park and Oxegen this summer, and will also release their fifth studio album.

Hyde Park is already set to host the likes of Arcade Fire, Kings Of Leon and Hard Rock Calling acts Rod Stewart and Bon Jovi this summer, and if rumours are to be believed, Coldplay are the next big name set to be announced to perform this year.

This year’s Oxegen line-up has been revealed, with a host of big names confirmed for Ireland’s biggest music festival. Foo Fighters and Arctic Monkeys had already been confirmed for the event, and last night’s announcement of acts such as Black Eyed Peas, Coldplay and The Strokes joining the bill has increased the demand for tickets.

Arctic Monkeys have confirmed details of two consecutive shows to take place at Don Valley Bowl in Sheffield this year. The band, who have already been confirmed to headline Oxegen Festival in July, will perform at the Sheffield venue on Friday 10th June and Saturday 11th June.

Pictures have been posted of the Arctic Monkeys working on their new album (yet to be named) in Hollywood. The album will be produced by Simian Mobile Disco’s James Ford who co-produced their 2009 album ‘Humbug’ with Josh Homme. The Album (their forth) is set to be realsed in early spring. Blink 182 have announced that they will be headlining Oxegen Festival in Ireland, along with Foo Fighters and Arctic Monkeys, who have already been announced in the line up.

Oxegen will take place between the 7th and 11th July 2011 near Dublin, and the reformed pop punk giants, who played Reading and Leeds 2010, will return to the UK in the summer, along with their Oxegen appearance.

Jay-Z to help JLS launch higher profile in America

Having recently topped the charts with The Club Is Alive, it would be difficult to imagine things going much better for X Factor band JLS. However, rap mogul Jay-Z has taken a shine to the boyband, and wants to take the act to the United States!

Jay-Z was hosting a World Cup party backstage at Oxegen Festival in Dublin at the weekend, and was suitably impressed with JLS’ number one single to get in touch. He reportedly envisages them becoming stars in the vein of Boys II Men and Jodeci, so the fortunes of Aston Merrygold, Marvin Humes, Jonathan “JB” Gill, and Oritsé Williams look very bright indeed.

If some of the more ambitious bands of bygone eras such as Led Zeppelin and Queen were looking for successors, Muse would have to be in serious consideration. However, such is the rate that the British band continue to evolve that they could yet exceed their past contemporaries both in terms of popularity and brilliance.

Having headlined Glastonbury, T In The Park and Oxegen Festivals already this summer, Muse tickets are still very much in demand – and the support acts for their gigs at Lancashire County Cricket Club and Wembley Arena are quite wonderful indeed.

Earth, Wind & Fire have sold a quite remarkable 90 million albums worldwide at last count, and their career has been going for more than forty years. The California based band will perform live at Oxegen Festival just outside Dublin, Ireland this weekend, but for those who missed the boat across the Irish Sea, they will embark on a short UK tour afterwards.

Kasabian tickets for headline shows available now; festival appearances too

Kasabian are obviously huge festival fans, given that they will perform live at three this summer. The Leicestershire band will play at T In The Park and Oxegen Festival this weekend – as well as V Festival in August.

However, those Kasabian fans who don’t have festival tickets need not fear. The band have announced a concert as part of Belsonic Festival in Custom House Square, Belfast on August 17th 2010, and a gig at O2 Academy Brixton in London on August 19th 2010. Kasabian tickets for those two concerts are on sale as of this morning – and each will doubtless be a very special affair as the rockers attempt to get in the mood for their headline slot at V Festival.

Mumford & Sons Review: Sigh No More band rock Eden Project with Doves

Mumford & Sons have enjoyed quite a year so far. Having achieved the rare feat of appealing to both Radio One and Radio Two listeners at the same time, it ought to be no surprise that the London group have seen a surge in popularity – but to do so on such a grand scale is mightily impressive.

They played an Eden Session at Cornwall’s famous complex of biomes The Eden Project recently in support of indie stalwarts Doves, and after opening with album title track Sigh No More, songs such as The Cave, Little Lion Man and Roll Away Your Stone went down a treat with the crowd. Frontman Marcus Mumford announced to the crowd at one point that it was their first ever show in Cornwall, but one got the feeling that it would not be their last.

The Eden Session only served to whet fans’ appetite for more shows, but luckily the band have just announced some: Mumford & Sons tickets are currently on sale for their headline tour of the UK in October 2010 – as well as their multiple festival appearances. A full list of live dates is below:

It will be a festival filled summer for Leicestershire rockers Kasabian in 2010, with the band set to perform live at T In The Park, Oxegen Festival and V Festival.

However, Kasabian will also play at Belsonic Festival in Custom House Square on August 17th, with a special gig also arranged for O2 Academy Brixton, London on August 19th.

Kasabian tickets for those two concerts go on sale tomorrow (Friday 9th July 2010) at 09:00 – with tickets to the rest of their festival appearances already available.

Arcade Fire Hackney Empire concert tonight: Win Butler back in UK Suburbs

It has been a long three years. Arcade Fire’s last album Neon Bible was released in 2007, and the Canadian geniuses have been working hard on the follow up Suburbs – due out on August 2nd 2010.

Fans are right to be excited. Frontman Win Butler gave an interview to Zane Lowe recently in which he declared himself delighted with the record – adding that usually he can’t stand to listen to his own work.

While only a select few managed to get Arcade Fire tickets for tonight’s concert at Hackney Empire, the Montreal band will play live in the UK on a number of other occasions this summer – with confirmed dates at Oxegen Festival outside Dublin – as well as at Leeds and Reading Festivals.

Given that the London gig is in preparation for their performance at Oxegen Festival, it is not unreasonable to imagine that Arcade Fire will arrange something similar before their appearances at Reading and Leeds Festival.

Paolo Nutini Eden Session tickets available; first artist ever to play twice

Due to overwhelming demand for his first show, Paolo Nutini has signed up to become the first ever artist to play at Cornwall’s Eden Project twice in one year. He will be joined for both gigs by support act Martha Wainwright, who is a fantastic singer in her own right.

The Eden Sessions are a unique opportunity for music fans to see their favourite acts perform in the splendid setting of the biomes of the Eden Project – one of which is the largest greenhouse in the world. Whilst Paolo Nutini tickets are on sale for the first session on Tuesday July 13th 2010 from £96, the second Eden Session on Wednesday July 14th 2010 has face value tickets on sale for £35 from Viagogo.

Latitude headline act Florence And The Machine live at Belsonic Festival

Florence And The Machine have had a wonderful two years: a number one album with Lungs, countless record sales and a BRIT Award for Best British Album.

It is clear that the UK public cannot get enough of Florence Welch and co., and it is easy to see why. On stage Florence floats around like confetti in the wind; her dresses billowing white sheets in high contrast to her flame red hair. Having blown the crowd away at Glastonbury Festival, Florence And The Machine will also play T In The Park, Oxegen Festival, the Summer Series at Somerset House, and headline Latitude Festival.

T In The Park headliners Kasabian have received support from the unlikeliest of fans: Spain and Liverpool striker Fernando Torres. He has told the Sun that the Leicestershire band are the best British band since the Beatles, and that the Spanish national team listen to their rifftastic single Club Foot before every international match to get them fired up! Barcelona and Argentina star Lionel Messi has revealed himself to be a fan of the defunct Britpop band Oasis.

As well as their performances at both T In The Park, Oxegen Festival and V Festival this summer, Kasabian tickets will go on sale on Friday 9th July 2010 for two special performances at Belfast Belsonic on August 17th 2010 and the O2 Academy Brixton in London on August 19th 2010.

Muse may have had their famous UFO banned from Glastonbury Festival and T In The Park due to health and safety reasons, but the wonderfully ambitious band have no plans to drop the spectacular prop from their own live sets at Wembley Stadium and Lancashire County Cricket Club.

Support acts have been announced for all three dates – and there are some huge names amongst the openers!

Eminem retains UK number one album spot with Recovery

Eminem fought off Scissor Sisters to retain the number one spot in the UK Album Chart for a second week. The Detroit rapper – also known as Slim Shady – has achieved an incredible amount of success throughout his stellar career, with approximately 80 million records sold and eleven Grammy awards won, and another UK number one only goes to demonstrate his continued popularity worldwide.

Eminem will headline T In The Park in Scotland this summer, as well as playing at Oxegen Festival just outside Dublin.

T In The Park tickets are on sale now, and Eminem will be joined by Muse, Kasabian, Jay-Z, Black Eyed Peas, Dizzee Rascal, Vampire Weekend and The Prodigy amongst others. Day tickets are currently available from £104, while weekend tickets will set festival fans back at least £169.

Cult Canadian band Arcade Fire will perform at Hackney Empire on July 7th, just ahead of their performance at Oxegen Festival. Singer Win Butler has arguably the most emotive voice in music, with every syllable resonating with meaning, and the group are expected to reel off a string of their most famous songs – including Rebellion (Lies), Keep The Car Running and Intervention – as well as new material from forthcoming album The Suburbs.

Arcade Fire tickets are on sale now and will undoubtedly be snapped up fast by their eager fans. Support acts are yet to be announced.

Those who don’t manage to get their hands on Arcade Fire tickets will have a further chance to see the band this summer at Leeds and Reading Festival between August 27th – 28th.

Mumford & Sons tickets are now available for the band’s extra HMV Apollo show. The band will now perform on Saturday 9th October as well as on the previous day.

Arcade Fire set to play one-off London show

Arcade Fire will perform a one-off gig in London next week in support of their latest album, The Suburbs. The band will perform at The Hackney Empire on July 7th. Arcade Fire tickets will go on sale on Friday 2nd July.

The band are also set to play at Oxegen Festival in Ireland, and will headline Reading and Leeds Festival this August with tickets still available from fan-to-fan ticket exchange websites such as Viagogo, Seatwave and GetMeIn.

Reading weekend ticket prices start at £222 and Leeds weekend tickets can be bought for £215. Blink 182, Guns N’ Roses and The Libertines are all also set to appear across the weekend.

UK number one album star Eminem learning to live with fame

Eminem may have sold tens of millions of albums – with latest release Recovery going straight to the top of the UK album chart – but he is not letting fame go to his head. Speaking to Rap Radar, Slim Shady stated that he believed he was still a normal guy who just lived for the music. Selling records is of course important to the hip hop star, but equally he yearns for the respect of his peers in the rap business.

Eminem’s comeback hasn’t just been a success in the record industry though. He will also make a triumphant return to live performance at T In The Park and Oxegen Festival, and is expected to perform all his most famous songs: My Name Is, Stan, Without Me and Lose Yourself amongst others.

Jay-Z and Eminem play secret show ahead of T In The Park and Oxegen

Jay-Z and Eminem played a secret show together on the roof of the Ed Sullivan theatre for the Late Show with David Letterman on Tuesday evening – with just 100 people present. Amongst the lucky people in the audience was a certain P Diddy, who will be making a music comeback himself, but the night was all about Eminem and Jay-Z.

The two rappers performed Not Afraid by Eminem, Jay-Z’s On To The Next One and then their collaboration Renegade – which first featured on Jay-Z’s Blueprint album.

Jay-Z and Eminem will also both play at T In The Park and Oxegen Festival in Scotland and Ireland respectively. The two events are twinned in a similar vein to Leeds Festival and Reading Festival, and take place on the 9th – 11th July 2010.

Vampire Weekend: Gorillas + Basement Jaxx = Rock n’ Roll

Vampire Weekend frontman Ezra Koenig was recently asked by the Daily Star what the most rock n’ roll thing he had ever done was. The journalist almost certainly expected something of the ilk of throwing a television set out the window, or getting suitably inebriated with Amy Winehouse et al.

Koenig had something rather different in mind.

He recalled a time when his band played alongside Basement Jaxx in Sweden, and as the dance music kings began to play Where’s Your Head At?, Vampire Weekend donned gorilla suits and jumped around like maniacs.

Pretty rock n’ roll indeed.

Vampire Weekend are one of the three headline acts to be performing at Latitude Festival in Suffolk this year, alongside Florence & The Machine and Belle & Sebastian. Vampire Weekend will close out the Sunday night of the festival, and Latitude Festival tickets are on sale now. Weekend tickets beginning at a price of £226 through official festival partner Viagogo.

Prior to their Latitude slot, Vampire Weekend will play at T In The Park in Scotland, and Oxegen Festival just outside Dublin.

T In The Park is twinned with Oxegen Festival in Ireland in 2010 – in much the same way that Reading and Leeds Festival are. That means that the Scottish festival will share many of the same phenomenal acts as its Irish partner – Muse, Eminem, Kasabian, Faithless, Stereophonics, Jay-Z, The Black Eyed Peas and The Prodigy to name but a few.

However, T In The Park also gets plenty acts that it can call its own. Madness, The Proclaimers, Skunk Anansie and The View are examples of groups that will only be playing at T.

Arcade Fire, Muse and Eminem headline the event, with very able support coming from acts of the calibre of Jay-Z, the Black Eyed Peas, Kasabian, The Prodigy, Florence and the Machine, Groove Armada, Earth, Wind & Fire, Fatboy Slim, Tinie Tempah and Chipmunk – and that is only naming a tiny selection.

Fans can still buy tickets for Stereophonics festival tour

Stereophonics are embarking on a list of festival dates in the British Isles that will please fans who were unable to get their hands on a ticket to any of their arena shows in March.

Stereophonics warm up by playing the first ever concert at the new Cardiff City Stadium on Saturday but there are still over 6ooo tickets available for the rest of their summer excursions.

Stereophonics tickets are still availeble for that date and for their subsequent appearances at Oxegen Festival, T-In The Park and V Festival.

Tickets begin at £80 to see the Welsh rockers at V Festival or Oxegen but despite the expensive looking price tag it’s worth remembering that they will be just one of a host of acts and entertainers performing at each festival.
