Andy Roddick however, will play no further part.

Prior to yesterday, the biggest name players to have crashed out of Wimbledon were 8th seed Fernando Verdasco and 11th seed Marin Cilic. Last night, 9th seed David Ferrer was also eliminated after a five set loss to Robin Soderling, but that was no huge surprise given that the Swede was seeded higher at 6th – and Ferrer is far stronger on clay than grass.

The biggest shock yesterday was Andy Roddick’s loss to Yen-Hsun Lu of Chinese Taipei (formerly Taiwan). The American made it to last year’s final but did not take control of the game with either his serve or his forehand – usually his two finest assets.

After struggling in their first few matches to capture their very best form, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal won convincingly yesterday, and now look close to being back to their best.

On the women’s side, Kim Clijsters won the battle of Belgium as she came from one set down to defeat compatriot Justine Henin. After playing a fairly atrocious first set, Clijsters upped her game admirably to seal a victory, and interestingly Henin has not beaten her fellow Belgian since the pair emerged from retirement. Despite Clijsters’ excellent form, Venus and Serena Williams remain the favourites for the title.

Finally, Andy Murray continues his excellent form at Wimbledon 2010. He is the only player on the men’s side not to have dropped a set so far in the tournament, and overcame the winner of the AEGON Championships at Queens Club, Sam Querrey, with aplomb. Murray will next face the exciting Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the next round, and will hope to up his first serve percentage. The rest of the British number one’s game continues to fire nicely.

<a

He will take on American fast server Sam Querrey, who won the prestigious grass court tournament at Queens Club just prior to Wimbledon.

Still, Murray’s return is one of the best parts of his game – and arguably the best in the world – and Querrey will have to serve as well as he did in the AEGON Championships to progress, as well as overcome the mental barrier of a partisan crowd in favour of the British player.

With the championship entering its second week, <a

Andy Murray lost the opening two sets against mercurial Frenchman Richard Gasquet in their first round match of the French Open, which immediately brought Gasquet’s capitulation at Wimbledon from the same position two years ago.

In SW19, crowd pressure and mental fatigue appeared to get to Gasquet, but at Roland Garros, his loss was more down to physical condition.

Having played and won an exhausting final in Nice against Fernando Verdasco on Saturday, Gasquet looked in excellent form ahead of the French Open. However, with just a day between that match and his clash with Murray, he barely had any time to recover.

Despite playing excellently for the first two sets, with multiple winners from his beautiful backhand, he could not maintain his level, and the British number one lives to fight another day. The Spanish tennis ace will use the grass court event at London’s Queen’s Club to help him prepare for Wimbledon, which is the climax of the grass season. He will hope that this season follows a similar trajectory to 2008, when his fine form at Queen’s continued throughout Wimbledon fortnight and he emerged as champion – a stunning feat for someone many thought would never enjoy success on grass.

Last year, Andy Murray won the title and became the first Briton to win the title since 1938, and looks set to compete again this year. The star-studded field also should include Queen’s regulars Andy Roddick and Lleyton Hewitt.

<a
