The match could be the first of four meetings in the space of 18 days, as an expected Champions League semi-final and Copa del Rey final loom on the horizon.

Schuster told Marca: “Both teams are pretty equal at the back and up front. However, Barcelona are superior in midfield with the creativity of Xavi, Andres Iniesta and Sergio Busquets. That makes them the better team at the moment.”

He added: “Everyone knows that the season will be decided in the upcoming two weeks.

“This Saturday’s match will be more important for Real Madrid than for Barcelona. If Barca lose, there won’t be too much of a problem as they’re still five points clear.

“I believe that Madrid have what it takes to beat Barcelona over one match, but I can’t see them doing it over two games. Real are Barcelona’s biggest rival both in Spain and in Europe.”

Barcelona are top of La Liga with 84 points from 31 games, while Real Madrid are eight points behind.

<a

Real Madrid under Mourinho, is someone that could handle him and get the best out of him.

“It is painful to say that that the best player you have, which he is at United, he is better off trying something new. United will probably not sell him to another English club, but a change of scenery would help.”

Rooney was forced to sit out of Manchester United’s 2-0 win over Fulham, with the victory maintaining their seven-point advantage at the top of the table.

Manchester United are now 1/7 in the Premier League odds, but their first immediate focus will be ensuring their qualification to the Champions League semi-finals at the expense of Chelsea, with Rooney able to take part in the second leg.

http://www.tixdaq.com/news/?p=17504

Nine time Champions League winners Madrid face the men from N17.

It’s the team with the most European Cup medals against the Champions League rookies.

It’s the team managed by a multi-million pound Hollywood manager who has won the tournament twice with two different clubs, against a manager famous for locking Amdy Faye in his house in an effort to sign him.

When Tottenham qualified for the Champions League through Peter Crouch’s winning goal at Manchester City last season, it was games like tonights at the Bernabeu that Spurs fans hoped for. Despite topping the group stages, beating Inter superbly at home on the way, and coming through a two legged game against AC Milan without conceding a goal, Spurs will be the underdogs tonight.

“We are the big underdogs,” manager Harry Redknapp said. “I’ve said all along that the two Spanish teams are the favourites. But we are not just coming here to turn up. The dream is still there for us all and we want to make that dream come true. We want to go all the way.”

This is the first time in seven years that Real Madrid have reached the quarter-final stage of the Champions League and on Saturday manager Jose Mourinho lost his nine year record of being undefeated in home games, stretching back to 2002 when he was manager of Porto. But Madrid will be the heavy favourites and are boosted by the inclusion of Cristiano Ronaldo, Gonzalo Higuain, Marcelo and Kaka in the squad to face Spurs.

Spurs own injury worries means they may only field six substitutes. All eyes will be on Gareth Bale, who has lit up the European stage and announced himself to the world by ripping apart Brazilian right back Maicon in the two games against Inter. But if Spurs can leave the Bernabeu with a good result, few would bet against them at White Hart Lane. If Madrid turn in a similar performance to some domestically, where they scored eight without reply against Levante and seven against Malaga, Spurs’ dream tie will quickly become a nightmare.

<a

They have a good manager who’s good at motivating players. They have a lot of good players and a player like [Gareth] Bale has impressed everyone.

“When I left Manchester United [in 2009], Tottenham wasn’t a team playing at the top of the league. It wasn’t them we were looking at, hoping they would lose points. But it has changed, and they have done great lately.”

Looking back clashes at White Hart Lane while a Red Devil, the £80 million man continued:

“I remember a great atmosphere like a lot of other stadiums in Great Britain, and that will help them. Theyw ere always a tough side to beat at home because you didn’t know what to expect.

“Now they fight a lot for each other to win as a team and we have a lot of respect for them. We all know that anything at this stage can happen. It’s one of the biggest matches for both clubs in many years, so the atmosphere will be very intense in both matches.”

http://www.tixdaq.com/news/?p=15797

The draw takes place in Nyon, Switzerland, on Friday the 18th of March.

All eyes will be on Nyon on Friday the 18th of March as the draw for the quarter- final stage of the 2010/2011 UEFA Champions League takes place. All 8 teams have been confirmed and there are some potentially mouthwatering ties. Real Madrid have qualified for this stage for the first time in a staggering seven years, keeping boss Jose Mourinho on course to win a third Champions League crown at three different clubs. Schalke have a new manager to lead them into the last eight, with Ralf Rangnick replacing the sacked Felix Magath. Carlo Ancelotti is looking for his third Champions League title as a manager and his first as Chelsea boss, Harry Redknapp leads Tottenham into the last eight for the first time in 50 years and Sir Alex Ferguson still has hopes of a Manchester United treble. England’s three remaining clubs will fancy their chances as no Premier League side has lost at home in the competition in 18 outings. The possibility of an El Clasico will excite fans the world over, particularly as Mourinho would like to exact revenge on Barca following Madrid’s 5-0 humiliation earlier in the season. Mourinho himself is keener to avoid former employers Chelsea and Inter; the holders having completed a remarkable comeback away to Bayern Munich from a seemingly unassailable position. Unbeaten on home soil in all competitions since October 2008, the Ukrainian champions Shakhtar Donetsk hold a formidable record at the Donbass Arena. Managers and players have stated preferences for who they face in the quarter-final, but whatever draw comes up, it’s sure to be 4 pulsating games. The ties will be played on 5/6 and 12/13 of April. The semi-final pairings will also be decided, with the games taking place on 26/27 April and 3/4 May. The final will takes place on Saturday the 28th of May at Wembley Stadium in London.

<a

On Saturday the 16th, WBA light-welterweight champion Amir Khan takes on European light-welterweight title-holder Paul McCloskey at Manchester’s MEN Arena. The next day Real Madrid take on Barcelona at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu in one of the biggest matches in club football. Tickets are available for both events.

Amir Kahn has not enjoyed the success that many thought he would after turning pro in 2005, but his popularity is undeniable. McCloskey may not be a huge name, but he will prove a stern test for Kahn, who will want to put on a show for his growing number of supporters.

Kahn has parted company with conditioning coach, Alex Ariza, the man credited for much of his recent success. However, he does not think this will affect the McCloskey bout. Kahn is the overwhelming favourite, but the tricky Irishman is more than capable and may just spring a surprise in what is expected to be an exciting fight.

With the exception of the Champions League final, El Clasico is perhaps the biggest club game in the world. It also rarely disappoints. The reverse fixture earlier in the season resulted in a 5-0 thrashing for Real Madrid, including David Villa bagging two goals for Barcelona, inflicting a first defeat for Jose Mourinho since he took over at Real.

Mourinho will be eager to get revenge, especially at a time when Barcelona look a little less invincible after their Champions League loss to Arsenal and a lumbering, albeit victorious, performance at home to Athletic Bilbao. Barcelona still lead Real by five points in La Liga, so a win for Mourinho’s expensively assembled side will be vital in keeping the title race open.

Tickets are available for both events now.

<a

The spine of the World Cup winning Spain side. A side that won everything possible in 2009. The courageously hair-styled Carlos Puyol and his Thou Shalt Not Pass approach at the back. Xavi and Iniesta pulling the strings in midfield, feeding an irresistible strikeforce of David Villa, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and one other man. Lionel Messi gets a sentence all on his own. They have a glorious arrogance about them – unless you happen to be an Arsenal fan – and play some remarkable football.

Real Madrid. Winners of nine European Cups. Employers of some of the best footballers that have ever played the game: di Stefano, Puskas, Zidane, the Brazilian Ronaldo. Today they have Iker Casillas, capable of Gordon Banks-esque saves like against Sevilla in October 2009, as an angry colossus in goal. Sergio Ramos bombing up the right flank, his signature hair product retailing at $80 a barrel. The new Galacticos: Angel Di Maria, Kaka, Gonzalo Higuain – and of course Cristiano Ronaldo. A coach to match the players in Jose Mourinho, who shares the most ardent Madridista’s disdain for their Catalan rivals. They have a glorious arrogance about them – unless you happen to be a Manchester United fan of viruses – and play some remarkable football.

When the two giants of Spanish football meet, sparks tend to fly. While it is never easy to beat Barcelona at Camp Nou, in last season’s match at the Santiago Bernabeu Real Madrid’s tactical naivety was exposed. The then-manager Manuel Pellegrini elected against playing Lassana Diarra as a spoiler in midfield, meaning Xavi had free reign to supply Messi and Pedro for easy finishes.

<a

The last two matches have been tightly contested affairs, with Manchester United v Zenit St Petersburg, and Barcelona v Shakhtar Donetsk each decided by a single goal, and the 2010 event looks set to be similarly tight.

Inter Milan are the current European Cup holders, but have since lost coach Jose Mourinho to Real Madrid. In his place they have hired former Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez, and he won the competition back in 2005. Of course, that year the Reds came from 3-0 down to defeat AC Milan on penalties, and in inflicting such a morale sapping defeat on the Nerrazzuri’s arch rivals Benitez will have done his job prospects no harm at all.

Inter Milan boast plenty of star players. There is the rampaging right back Maicon, who doesn’t view shooting from practically a 180 degree angle as a ridiculous thing to do. For those questioning if the Brazilian’s goal against North Korea (or the Democratic People’s Republic Of Korea if you prefer) was deliberate, he scored a near identical one against Portugal in November 2008. The midfield boasts star names such as Esteban Cambiasso, and Wesley Sneijder, while up front Benitez can choose from Samuel Eto’o, Diego Milito, Goran Pandev and Mario Balotelli.

Formidable opposition for UEFA Europa Cup champions Atletico Madrid to tackle.

Still, the Spanish side can call upon a mighty strike pairing themselves. Diego Forlan and Sergio Aguero are two of the most feared forwards in Europe, and they are backed up by Jose Antonio Reyes, Simao Sabrosa, Raul Garcia and former Arsenal player Fran Merida. Forlan was awarded the Golden Ball at the 2010 World Cup, and with good reason – he appeared to be the only player to have mastered how to shoot with the Jabulani ball, and was a constant danger.

<a

The final weekend will decide the recipient of La Liga trophy, and it will go to one of the two biggest sides in the country: Real Madrid or Barcelona.

Barcelona are in pole position. They sit just one point in front of the Spanish capital side, and will play Valladolid at home. In addition, their home record is phenomenal. Barca have dropped league points in just one match all season – a 1-1 draw with Villarreal.

Real Madrid travel to lowly Malaga, and though they are strong favourites to win the match, the chances are that it will not be enough to claim the title. Unbelievably after scoring over one hundred goals and accumulating 95 points (potentially 98), they could still be denied the championship.

With both Valladolid and Malaga only above the relegation zone on goal difference, they will have ample motivation to try and pull a result out of the bag – and as yet could have a major say in the destination of the title.

<a

Inter Milan knocked his side out of the UEFA Champions League 3-2 on aggregate, and though Barcelona were undoubtedly rocked by the result, they responded in emphatic fashion. A 4-1 victory at Villarreal is impressive regardless of the circumstances, and they remain one point ahead of Real Madrid in La Liga’s standings.

Both Barcelona and Real Madrid have dropped points in just one home match each all season, and with Barca losing just once on the road they are undoubtedly the favourites for the title. Real Madrid will have to hope that their Catalan rivals drop points against either Tenerife, Real Valladolid or Sevilla if they are to avoid a trophyless season.

Only four teams have shut out Barcelona’s magnificent attack of Lionel Messi, Andres Iniesta, Zlatan Ibrahimovic et al this season: third placed Valencia, city rivals Espanyol, Internazionale (once in the Champions League Group Stage, but not in their two knockout ties), as well as, bizarrely, Rubin Kazan.

Can Tenerife, Valladolid or Sevilla do it? It looks unlikely. Barcelona won each of the reverse fixtures earlier in the season, scoring twelve goals and conceding none in the process; a clear illustration of their sublime footballing prowess.

<a

Real and Barca are both deadlocked on 74 points in the league, and both 21 points clear of third placed Valencia. Real Madrid have been in perfect form in the league, winning their last eight matches, and this is vital because only by winning La Liga that they can avoid a trophy-less season. Real and Barca are deadlocked on 65 points in the league each, with Madrid just ahead thanks to a +2 goal difference over their Catalan rivals. Because third place Valencia are 18 points behind, the title race is undoubtedly between these two sides. All this makes the forthcoming el Clásico clash all the more mouthwatering.

Real Madrid will face Barcelona at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium on Sunday April 11th 2010, and with a fortnight between their last league and El Clásico, they will either be hugely refreshed or suffering a loss of momentum due to a lack of matches. Barcelona will play both legs of their Champions League quarter finals against Arsenal in that period, and so they have the opposite fears of either burnout or heads dropping – should they lose.

It all makes for a fascinating build up ahead of the crucial tie, and Tixdaq.com has Real Madrid vs. Barcelona tickets at the cheapest available price online! Real Madrid lead Barcelona by virtue of superior goal difference – the Spanish capital’s side have a mere +2 advantage over their Catalan rivals. At the weekend, Barcelona played first and defeated Valencia 3-0 thanks to a sublime Lionel Messi hat-trick. Real Madrid then defeated Real Valladolid 4-1 with Gonzalo Higuain scoring three times and Cristiano Ronaldo getting the other goal.

Real Madrid have been gradually catching up on Barcelona in the last two months. Barca’s form is not exactly terrible, with six wins, one draw and one defeat in their last eight matches, but Real have won all eight of theirs, scoring an astonishing average of 3.62 goals a game! It would appear that the only way to separate these two huge rivals is in the ultimate grudge match: el Clásico. Real Madrid will have home advantage at the Santiago Bernabeu, and there is additional reason for them to crave a devastating victory. Real are already eliminated from the Champions League, which is especially disappointing for them as the final will be played at the Bernabeu. For Barcelona to win the trophy at the home ground of their arch rivals would be disastrous, so Real will hope that a victory in el Clásico will derail the Barcelona train sufficiently to see them falter in Europe’s premier club competition.

Tickets are still available for el Clásico – Real Madrid vs. Barcelona, and this year’s battle looks to be even more crucial than usual!

<a

For a start, there are 386 miles between the cities of Madrid and Barcelona. However, ask any fan of Real or Barca what the most important match of the season is, and they always give the same response: El Clásico.

This year, La Liga’s title race is extremely tight. With just fourteen games of the season left, Barcelona lead Real Madrid at the top by the tiny margin of two points. A win for Real Madrid at their home stadium, the Santiago Bernabéu, would mean more overtaking Barcelona in the championship. The one point lead would be no more significant than the advantage Barcelona currently hold, but the psychological effect could be devastating as the Catalan side have led the table for almost all the season. It is also equally important for both teams to avoid defeat as third-placed Juventus and second-placed Milan find themselves nine and eight points respectively behind Jose Mourinho’s leaders.

Milan may have lost their talisman Kaka to Real Madrid and Carlo Ancelotti to the Chelsea hotseat over the summer but this month sees the return to the club of another icon. David Beckham has re-joined the club on-loan from Los Angeles Galaxy as he bids to demonstrate his fitness and form ahead of the 2010 World Cup and the match at the Stadio Olimpico in Turin could be his first in a Milan shirt since his latest arrival.

Tickets for this mega-clash are still available to compare and buy at tixdaq.com with prices starting from £110.

La Liga breaks up for Christmas.

Before the footballers get a well-earned two-week rest there is one last set of fixtures with the most intriguing of them taking place at La Riazor.

Deportivo la Coruna take on Valencia as sixth place plays fourth with both sides seeking an early Christmas present.

A win for the home side would lift them above their visitors and possibly into fourth place. Deportivo will want to improve on their performance last weekend when they needed a late Pablo Alvarez goal to snare a draw at lowly Almeria. After a run of three straight wins they have secured just one point from their last two matches and will want to regain some momentum.

Valencia will be smarting from a damaging home defeat to Real Madrid. Twice Los Che came back from a goal behind against Manuel Pellegrini’s team only to lose to Ezequiel Garay’s late winner and see the gap stretched between them to six points.

One of Valencia’s scorers that day was David Villa who is out on his own at the top of the goalscoring charts with 12 goals. The lethal Spaniard is the club’s prize asset and main hope of Champions League qualification. He will be the main object of attention for Depor’s defenders.

Tickets for La Liga that could have bearing on the rest of the season for the respective clubs.

The biggesst game is undoubtedly Valencia’s match against Real Madrid at La Mestalla. The meeting of third and second in the table is the highest profile Spanish game since El Clasico and it is a game that Valencia dare not lose if they are to stay in touch with leaders. Real Madrid, on the other hand, will know that a win will put daylight between the two teams and increase the pressure on title rivals FC Barcelona.

The Spanish an European champions are in action in the Catalonia derby against Espanyol. The fixture has been dominated by the giants of FC Barcelona and it is hard to see beyond them this time either. Still, Espanyol are hovering above the relegation zone and any kind of positive result could provide the springboard to a good new year.

The other intriguing match sees Atletico Madrid entertain Villareal. These two teams have struggled badly this year after good campaigns last time and both currently sit in mid-table obscurity.

Tickets for all three matches ara still available to buy so check out the FIFA World Cup group. 2002 saw England draw Argentina, Sweden and Nigeria – with the South Americans exiting the tournament – while the Albicelestes then found themselves alongide Ivory Coast, Holland and Serbia-Montenegro in 2006.

This time it is their arch rivals Brazil that find themselves in a pickle as they have been pitted against Portugal, Ivory Coast and North Korea. The five-time winners should still be relevantly confident of going through but must be cursing England and Italy’s luck who arguably got the most plum draws of all the seeded teams. The grace of Kaka, the thrust of Maicon and the penetration of Luis Fabiano should see them safely through to the next round but they will need to maintain their concentration throughout.

Portugal will be even more disappointed. After a troubled qualifying campaign that only just saw them overhaul Sweden to claim second place they were then drawn against the free-scoring Bosnia-Herzogovina in their playoff. They squeaked through with a 2-0 aggregate win but will have to improve massively if they are to make an impact on the tournament. Able to call on the sublime skills of Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo and an experienced back four, they will need big performances from them all to guarantee their place in the next round.

Ivory Coast must have spent the last four years routinely trashing every mirror they have come across as they find themselves in a horrible group for the second tournament in succession. Chelsea’s Didier Drogba will need to be fresh and firing for them to have any hope of progressing but if he is then he might just be a contender for the Golden Boot. The Toure brothers and Didier Zokora will be names familiar to most but they do have a talented squad. They will definitely need it.

North Korea have made it to their first finals since 1966 where they famously dumped Italy out of the competition before being eliminated by Portugal in the quarter-finals by a 5-3 scoreline despite taking a 3-0 lead. There is no chance of them recreating this adventure – and you can quote me on that – but just being there will hopefully bring a bit of joy to a people that have lived under a brutally oppresive regime for more than half a century.

Prediction: Brazil to top the group with Ivory Coast bringing tears to Ronaldo’s eyes.

<a
