France coach Marc Lievremont makes five changes to his side for the clash against Wales. Alexis Palisson of Brive, who has failed to nail down a consistent starting berth, is on the left wing. Youngs is currently England’s first-choice scrum-half and preparing to take on Scotland in Sunday’s Calcutta Cup clash. But before his first call up, the Leicester No9 found it hard to understand what Johnson was telling him.

According to the Evening Standard, Youngs feared the worst when Martin Johnson told him: “You’re on the bench”.

Young said: “I was in the team hotel in Bagshot when Johnno came up and said I was on the bench. As Leicester had been knocked out of the LV Cup, I didn’t think we had a game. I then thought that if one had been arranged at short notice, I couldn’t understand why I had been dropped to the bench by the club.

“I told Johnno this and he looked at me in amazement and said: ‘No, you are on the bench for us!’ All I could say was ‘brilliant’ as it started to sink in.

Lawes, who only recently returned from injury, may be deemed surplus to requirements for an England team that has won three from three in this year’s Six Nations. If Lawes is released he will have just one day with Northampton Saints to prepare for their match with Leeds.

Saint director of rugby, Jim Mallinder, said: “That is one of the unfortunate things about the agreement the clubs have with the RFU, is that we have not got a say in that. We still don’t know when he will be available to us. At the moment he is covering for a couple of players and it is their right to keep him if they see fit.”

After a mixed bag of results in the Autumn Internationals the major teams from the northern hemisphere can now turn their attention to the 2010 Six Nations Championship.

The competition kicks off on the February 6th at Croke Prk when Ireland begin the defence of their crown with a home match against Italy. That same Saturday sees the first of several epic encounters as Wales travel to Twickenham to take on a stuttering England team that limped through November.

Scotland welcome France to Murrayfield the following day hoping to recreate the spirit and performance of their remarkable 9-8 win against Australia.

Wales’ confidence of a back-to-back win against a faltering Australia – who lost 8-9 the previous weekend to Scotland – wewre dashed as a regrouped and revitalised Wallabies scythed through Welsh defences to score five times in the convincing 33-12 win.  Dogged kicking by Stephen Jones kept the home side barely in touch to reach 12-23 at half-time, but two more tries from the visitors sealed the game tight and banished memories of the Australian’s loss to Wales this time last year.

On a high from beating Australia last week, Scotland should have been on the front foot against Argentina, but despite controlling the first half of the game to lead 6-0 at the break, the Scots could not control their discipline, giving away two penalties to even the score at 6-6, and at 78′ Martin Rodriguez dropped into goal to take the game 9-6, leaving Scotland with a 19-year-long record of losses to the Pumas at home.

Elsewhere South Africa extended its run of disappointing results with a loss to Ireland at Croke Park.  The Springboks led 10-6 thanks to two tries at the break, in a match notable more for post-Lions tour niggling and some predictable gamesmanship from Schalk Burger.  Again the Springboks’ discipline was the death of them as Sexton slotted three more penalties for Ireland to take the match despite late pressure from South Africa.

There is a prestige friendly on December 5^th when a Barbarians invitational XV takes on New Zealand at Twickenham but for Wales, Ireland, Scotland, France and Italy their last matches before the Six Nations Championship take place this weekend – England’s programme ended in defeat against the All Blacks last Saturday.

There are two particularly mouth-watering matches taking place. In Marseille at the Stade Velodrome, France take on New Zealand in a fixture that has always had something about it. Twice France have eliminated the All Blacks from the World Cup yet they have also suffered some massive defeats to them on home soil. France’s tour of New Zealand in the summer yielded a victory and a narrow defeat and the home side will be take significant encouragement from that.

At Croke Park in Dublin, the best of both hemispheres clash as Ireland take on South Africa. The reigning Six Nations champions face the Tri-Nations champions in what is something of an unofficial world championship though the Springboks will be keen to point out that it is they that are actually the World Cup holders. Ireland snuck a last minute draw against Australia two weeks ago and know they will have to up their game against South Africa even if the tourists have massively underperformed so far in Europe.

Wales face Australia in Cardiff in another attractive fixture with the Wallabies keen to erase memories of last weekend’s shock 9-8 defeat at Murrayfield. Their conquerors, Scotland, take on Argentina this weekend while Italy face the power and bulk of Samoa.

This weekend Ireland kept alive their dream of a first Grand Slam for 61 years with a hard-fought win over Scotland. Scotland had led 12-9 at half-time as Chris Paterson traded penalties with Ireland’s Ronan O’Gara, who became the leading Six Nations points scorer. Replacement Jamie Heaslip’s try after the break turned the match and gave Ireland the lead for the first time. O’Gara’s conversion, a drop-goal and another penalty were enough to set up a title decider in Wales next weekend.

Meanwhile England stunned France with a magnificent first-half display to run out five-try winners at Twickenham. Martin Johnson’s under-pressure side answered their critics in emphatic fashion and led 29-0 at the break. Mark Cueto, Riki Flutey, Delon Armitage and Joe Worsley all crossed in an astonishing first period before Flutey added his second. France improved in the second half and scored through Dimitri Szarzewski and Julien Malzieu but the game was won.

A 72nd-minute try from replacement Tom Shanklin kept alive Wales’ hopes of defending their Six Nations title. Gavin Henson set up Shane Williams for a dazzling first-half try, but Italy’s fired-up pack rocked Wales and Andrea Marcato’s boot gave them a 12-7 lead. Wales sent on their bench and James Hook’s boot gave them a 13-12 edge Shanklin conceded a penalty, Marcato’s fifth kick opening up a potential upset at the Stadio Flaminio, but a fine Hook break gave the centre the crucial try.

As the 2009 RBS Six Nations tournament approaches its final weekend, Ireland will be fighting with Wales to claim the coveted Six Nations rugby crown. If Wales are to have any chance of claiming the title, they will need to beat Ireland by more than twelve points. A win for the Irish would secure the title and the Grand Slam. Meanwhile England will be looking to build on their impressive performance as they host Scotland at Twickenham, while Italy will host France in Rome.
