The tragedy at Pukkelpop festival resulted in a number of stages collapsing in very strong winds and torrential rain, leaving five dead and hundreds injured. In an interview with BBC Newsbeat, Benn said of Pukkelpop: “If we had something similar I know what actions I would take in order to make sure people were safe. I have to table top exercises with the emergency services about the actions I would take in the event of all of those things. Believe me, there is no scenario of an eventuality that I have not looked at, including freak storms. I know how I would deal with it to ensure peoples’ safety. The level of effort over safety is immense. It’s the thing which keeps me awake at night.”

Speaking to the NME he commented, “We played at about half past two but were in our bus when it happened about five or six. The weather got mad, I’ve never seen anything like it, it was almost apocalyptic. It was pitch black like night but was only 5 o’clock.”

“He went on to add, The freakiest part was that it went dead silent and for a festival that isn’t something that usually happens. Then people were just running away. A tree had fallen in the backstage area and a branch had gone straight through one of the tents, it was madness.”

He told website Spinner.com: “I never wrote on an acoustic guitar before. I bought the guitar about four years ago. I had old, crappy nylon string ones before. But I bought this guitar, fell in love with it and fell in love with playing it as I wrote for the new record. It was really just fun. I’d sit around with friends, drink wine and just keep playing, playing, playing.”

Singer Alison has previously admitted the group’s methods for writing songs is unorthodox, with her and Jamie working largely independently of each other.

She explained: “The way we both write songs is, we’re in the same place, but we’re both in different rooms where we can’t hear each other, writing at the same time. Then we meet up and play each other what we’re doing, and then there’s a response.”

Jamie has also admitted that the recording of ‘Blood Pressures’ – the band’s first album for three years – was delayed by Alison’s commitment to her other band, but said it was worth it because of how it boosted her confidence.

He said: “I really noticed the change in her voice when she came back off tour with The Dead Weather. It had become so strong. There was more confidence there.”

Jack White has recently confirmed that he will perform a series of intimate gigs with his new band, The Dead Weather, this week. The White Stripes and Raconteurs frontman will play three shows at a temporary record store in Los Angeles with his fellow Dead Weather band mates.

The Dead Weather also features The Kills’ Allison Mosshart, Jack Lawrence from The Raconteurs and Queens Of The Stone Age’s Dean Fertita.

The band will be showcasing material from the recent release of the debut Dead Weather album, Horehound.

The in-store shows form apart of the current Dead Weather tour which includes visits to San Diego, Atlanta and Mexico City before heading over to the UK.

The UK Dead Weather tour kicks off at Manchester Academy on October 19.  Jack White and co. also visit Newcastle O2 Academy (October 21), Edinburgh Picture House (October 22), Leeds O2 Academy (October 23), Bristol O2 Academy (October 25) and Birmingham O2 Academy (October 26).
