Star of West End show Wicked set to continue role into 2012

Rachel Tucker is to continue playing Wicked’s leading witch Elphaba into 2012, it has been confirmed.

Wicked, a musical that follows the untold story of the Witches of Oz, has become one of the most popular shows available in London’s West End since opening in 2006. It has been seen by nearly four million theatregoers and won the 2010 Olivier Audience Award.

Speaking about his leading cast member, the production’s Executive Producer Michael McCabe said, “Since first joining our cast in March 2010, Rachel has thrilled audiences and critics alike with her powerful and passionate performance as Elphaba. We are all absolutely thrilled that Rachel has now decided to continue leading the company with her extraordinary professionalism and great dedication to the role – we couldn’t be more proud of her success.”

Wicked tickets are on sale for shows running until October 2012 at London’s Apollo Victoria Theatre.

Plan B won’t tone down cockney accent for the U.S

Plan B has declared that he has no intention of toning down his Cockney accent to please American audiences.

The ’She Said’ star, who is to try and crack the US music market later in the year, asserted that he will not be getting elocution lessons.

“I won’t be taking a translator to the US,” he said. “It really annoys me when people over there say they can’t understand British accents. If anyone says that to me, I’m gonna say: ‘Well, I can understand your nasal accent’, so how does that work? I won’t be going all posh, or all American.

“If my accent becomes a problem in interviews, then I’m going to play on it even more and go pure Cockney. I’ll get worse.”

The singer-songwriter admitted that he is excited to be introducing his material to a new audience, but fears that he may find promoting the album boring, after an extensive UK push over the last year.

“I’m in two minds about the promotion. It’ll be a bit like going back to the beginning, talking about all that stuff I talked about when no-one knew me in the UK,” he explained. “I might start to find it a bit boring going over all that stuff again.”

He also contemplated that he may be compared to Tinie Tempah, who has recently started to become known in the US, stating that people may “pit [him] against” the ’Pass Out’ rapper.

“I’d never hate on another British artist. I support them. And they love Adele over there, too, which is wicked. I love the thought of Adele, Tinie and me showing the States how it’s done.”

Plan B has previously hinted that he would like to make a “punk record” in the future.

The Wanted: We will be bigger than Take That

The Wanted have claimed that they want to be bigger and better than perhaps the most famous boy-band in the World, Take That.

Irish singer Siva Kaneswaran says the band can easily match the successes of any of their rivals.

‘We want to be as big as or bigger than Take That,’ declared the 22-year-old.

Celebrating the band’s addition to this year’s iTunes festival bill, he said: ‘We went and watched last year so this is wicked. We’re going to be doing something really special.’

Chase and status turned down Rihanna collaboration

Arguably dubsteps biggest stars, Chase and Status turned down collaborationg arguably pop’s biggest star Rihanna on a track for their new album ‘No more idols’. They said the reason that they had to turn down the Barbadian R’nB recording artist was because they wanted to keep the album ‘thourly British’. “There was talk about working with Rihanna and other names linked to Roc Nation but we weren’t tempted. We wanted the album to showcase fresh and cutting-edge UK talent,” said Saul ‘Chase’ Milton. The duo released their first single of their new album last week, the fantastic and nostalgic dubstep take on an early 90′s rave tune ‘Blind faith’ featuering the Nottingham born singer/songwriter Liam Bailey. The album itself featuers many colaborations, “We’re known for working with new artists such as Plan B and that’s what really excites us. On the album we’ve worked with Clare Maguire who just has this amazing voice and will appeal to everyone Mali, Delilah and Tempa T, all of whom are wicked,” added Milton, 29. One of the tracks produced by the outfit featuered ‘forget you’ and ‘it’s OK’ American soul singer Cee-lo Green. “Admittedly Cee-Lo isn’t British but he sings on a track called Brixton Briefcase, which is about London in the 80s when guys used to walk around with ghetto blasters on their shoulders, that’s what a Brixton briefcase is and Cee-Lo loved it. There was no ego at all. He was just like: ‘I’ll do whatever you want me to do.’ Working with him was cool.”” said Milton.

Wicked launch competitions to find writing talent

The writer of the spectacular West End musical Wicked, Gregory Maguire, has set up two competitions to uncover more talented writers. The Wicked Young Writers’ Award 2010 asks entrants to write a 750 word story, poem or illustrated work on any subject before July 31st, and the prize for each age category consists of four tickets to see Wicked, an advice session with the judging panel on becoming a professional writer, as well as the honour of being published in an anthology of all the works. Twenty writers across different ages ranging from 5 to 16 will also be invited to an awards ceremony at the show’s venue – the Apollo Victoria.

Lee Mead to join Wicked cast

Any Dream Will Do sensation Lee Mead is to return to the West End after landing a role in hit show Wicked. The star – who headed the cast in Joseph And the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat – will join the cast on May 10 to play the part of Fiyero. He said: ‘I’m really excited to be returning to the West End in this incredible show. Fiyero is a fantastic part.’

Wicked, now in its fourth year at London’s Apollo Victoria Theatre, has been seen by more than 2.5 million people, and tells the untold story of the Witches of Oz.

Another new addition to the cast is Julie Legrand, best known to TV audiences as crazed nurse Jeanette Dunkley from Footballers’ Wives. She joins the cast on March 29.

Snow brings down West End Theatre Curtain

English National Opera was the first company to announce that its evening performance of La Boheme had been called off, while the Royal Opera House soon took the same decision, with tonight’s performance of Die tote Stadt also cancelled.

Now scores of plays and musicals have followed suit. Confirmed cancellations so far include: Mamma Mia!, Jersey Boys, Les Miserables, Oliver!, Avenue Q, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Complicit, Grease, Carousel, Be Near Me, Hairspray, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Wicked, Sunset Boulevard, The Sound of Music, Billy Elliot – The Musical, Dirty Dancing – The Classic Story On Stage, Gethsemane, On The Waterfront, The Phantom Of The Opera, Private Lives, Twelfth Night, Stomp, The Mousetrap and We Will Rock You.

Further cancellations are expected and theatregoers are advised to contact theatres before starting out on their journey.

Theatre fans with tickets for tonights performances are bound to be disappointed to be missing out on what is an increasing popular night out on the West End. Fear not however many West End Theatre Tickets remain available for 2009 and are available from as little as £12.
